Little trip in France…

France is situated in the western part of Europe France is situated in the western part of Europe. It has many boundaries with other countries such as Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. There are approximatly 1300 km between France and Malta.

English Channel PARIS Atlantic Ocean Alpes Massif Central Pyrenees Mediterranean sea Paris is the capital of France. France is surrounded by three major seas, the Mediterranean sea in the south, the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel in the west. The green colour refers to plains, the brown ones to mountains. The three main mountain ranges are the Alpes in the east, the Pyrenees in the south and the Massif Central.

The National emblems of France The French flag is composed of three colours, blue, white and red. It has first appeared in 1794 and is a legacy of the French Revolution. The blue colour refers to the city of Paris, the white one to the Monarchy and the red one to the blood of people. The figure of the cockerel comes from the Middle Age. It was a religious symbol that represented faith and hope.

« La liberté guidant le peuple » Eugène Delacroix Marianne is a woman figure that appeared during the French Revolution. She wears a Phrygian cap which was the symbol of liberty for the slaves in Greece and Roma. She is associated now with the Republic. The french national anthems is La Marseillaise. It was a warrior song during The French Revolution. It was adopted as the national anthem in 1795.

PARIS La Tour Eiffel, symbol of Paris! It was constructed in 1889 by Gustave Eiffel for the universal exposition. It is 327m high. It is probably the most famous monument in the world. From the top of the Eiffel Tower we can see the famous Champ de Mars!

Notre Dame de Paris It took two centuries to build this cathedral which is the biggest one in France. It has been finished in 1250. There is a famous story about this cathedral that has been written by Victor Hugo “Le Bossu de Notre Dame”.

L'Arc de Triomphe is at the end of the Champs Elysees which is the biggest and most famous avenue of Paris. Its has been built during the reign of Napoleon in 1806 to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz.

French landscapes On this picture you can see the Mont Blanc which is the highest mountain in Europe (4810m). Mont Blanc is in the Alpes. The image on the right is a landscape of the North west coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

School in France School is compulsory for children from 6 to 16 but most of the children start school at 3. There are two types of schools, public (state school) and private schools (public school). There is no religious courses taught in schools. All schools welcome both girls and boys. Pupils go to school 4 days a week(except on Wednesday). A day begins at 8H30 to 11H30 and then 13H30 to 16H30. Pupils can stay after school to do their homework until 17H30. There is also 2 breaks of 20mn during the day, one in the morning, the other in the afternoon.

Saint Etienne was an old mining city Saint Etienne was an old mining city. These mines were used to extract coal that was used to heat houses and to make the train work. These mines closed in the 1970’s because extracting coal in France was not cheap anymore.
