Rational & Irrational Numbers What is the difference between rational and irrational numbers?

Rational & Irrational Numbers In this lesson you will be able to state the definitions of rational and irrational numbers and apply the definition to recognize rational and irrational numbers.

Review A rational number is any number that can be expressed in the form a/b where a and b are both integers and b is not zero. Includes: +/- whole numbers, including zero (integers) All fractions and mixed numbers Any decimal that terminates or repeats

Irrational Numbers An irrational number is any number which cannot be expressed as a fraction a/b where a and b are both integers and b is not zero. - Includes decimals that never terminate and repeat

Irrational numbers must be represented by a symbol. The “……” If irrational number never terminate or repeat, how can it be represented? Irrational numbers must be represented by a symbol. The “……” Square Roots of Numbers that are NOT perfect squares. π Or any number included with π

Practice Which of the following are irrational numbers?

Conclusion In this lesson, you learned that an irrational number is a decimal that continues forever without repeating and that irrigational number must be represented by symbols. You can also determine whether a number is irrational.
