The set of real numbers consists of the set of rational numbers and the set of irrational numbers. Irrational numbersRational numbers Real Numbers Integers Whole numbers Natural numbers

Irrational numbers cannot be expressed as a ratio of 2 integers. Irrational numbers include: Non-terminating decimals; Non-repeating decimals; and Non-perfect squares. Rational numbers can be expressed as a ratio of 2 integers. Rational numbers include: Terminating decimals; Repeating decimals; and perfect squares. Real Numbers Imaginary numbers (i) ∞

Example 1: Classifying Real Numbers Write all names that apply to each number. 5 is a whole number. rational, real –12.75 is a terminating decimal. –12.75 rational, real 16 2 Natural, whole, integer, rational, real A. B. C. 5 simplified as 8 is a whole number.

Example 2 Write all names that apply to each number. irrational, real 1.257248… Irrational, real A. B. C. 0303 Whole, rational 0303 = 0 Non-terminating, non repeating decimal.
