American Folk art Artist David Bates (1952 - ) American Folk art Artist

Who is David Bates? David Bates was born in 1952. He is 64 years old. Yes, he’s STILL alive! He was born Dallas, Texas, where he lives and works today. His mother encouraged him to become an artist. When he was younger, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father. His was influenced early on by his favorite pastime and passion, fishing, and the natural settings of the Texas as well as the vibrant people (and all forms of life) that inhabit these worlds. After college, he spent a year studying art in New York City. He then became an art professor in Dallas, TX at Eastfield College. David’s style of art is known as FOLK art. FOLK art is based on subjects taken from everyday life and surroundings. Most of his artwork is based on everyday life. He became a full-time artist in 1983. In his artwork, you can see that his parents are major influences in his subjects. He mother and father are both recognizable in some of his work. In the 1990, he branched out into sculpture. Self Portrait, Winter, 2009

Norman Rockwell Pablo Picasso Leonardo di Vinci David Bates is known as a FIGURATIVE artist. Figurative art, describes any form of modern art that retains strong references to the real world Other well known figurative artists that we’ve studied in the past are: Norman Rockwell Pablo Picasso Leonardo di Vinci

Art Terms – things to think about when looking at this month’s art work, “Feeding the Dogs” by David Bates Composition – The plan, placement or arrangement of the ELEMENTS OF ART in a work, usually according to the principles of design. In other words, how the painting is “put together”. A few of the ELEMENTS OF ART are: Line — the visual path that enables the eye to move within the piece Shape — space between or around objects. Defined by edges within the piece, whether geometric or organic Color — hues with their various values and intensities Texture – Appears or feels rough or smooth. Pattern — You can create it by repeating a line, shape or color over and over again Focal Point (or center of interest) — the most important part or area in a work of art. All parts should center around, provide background for, or draw attention to the focal point

What is happening in this picture? LET’S TALK ABOUT IT… What is happening in this picture? What’s the FOCAL POINT of this painting? What makes it the FOCAL POINT? How many different types of LINES do you see? When lines come together they create SHAPE. What kinds of shapes do you see? Repeated shapes make PATTERN. How many patterns do you see? What COLORS do you see? Is there a specific color used to draw attention to certain objects? Feeding the Dogs, 1986

It’s your turn to make some art using these LINES COLOR It’s your turn to make some art using these Elements of Art! SHAPE pattern
