AEROBIC Cellular Respiration

Let’s look at the process of cellular respiration in general Draw this in your notebook. What must be present for aerobic cellular respiration to occur? Carbohydrates (sugars & starches) Oxygen oxygen Draw these into your diagram. carbohydrates

Let’s look at the process of cellular respiration in general What is produced during aerobic cellular respiration? Carbon dioxide Water Energy (ATP) Carbon dioxide oxygen Water Draw these into your diagram. Energy carbohydrates

Use your diagram to write the chemical equation for Aerobic cellular Respiration. Reactants Products What goes in What is made O2 +C6H12O6 CO2 +H2O+energy

How do the Carbohydrates break down? Just as photosynthesis uses the structure of the chloroplast to facilitate the process, cellular respiration uses the structure of an organelle called the MITOCHONDRIA. Chemical reactions occur inside the cells! Where? In the MITOCHONDRIA

A process called glycolysis breaks the 6 carbon glucose into two 3 carbon pyruvates. Cell Membrane glucose GLYCOLYSIS pyruvate 2 ATP Cytoplasm Mitochondria

THE PYRUVATES ENTER THE KREB’S CYCLE IN THE MITOCHONDRIA A.K.A. Citric Acid Cycle Cell Membrane glucose GLYCOLYSIS pyruvate Kreb’s Cycle CO2 2 ATP Cytoplasm 2 ATP Mitochondria

ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN ACROSS INNER MEMBRANES OF MITOCHONDRIA Cell Membrane glucose Kreb’s Cycle GLYCOLYSIS pyruvate CO2 ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN H2O 2 ATP Cytoplasm 2 ATP 32 ATP Mitochondria

WHAT IS ATP??? ATP (adenosine triphosphate) – a nucleotide with two extra energy-storing phosphate groups. Water + ATP → ADP + P + Energy How cells release energy from ATP: By releasing a phosphate group, the energy stored between the two can now be released. Notice negative charges – requires energy to hold together

SUMMARY: Stages of Aerobic Cellular Respiration There are “3” stages in aerobic cellular respiration: Glycolysis - Breakdown of Glucose Kreb’s cycle aka Citric Acid Cycle Electron transport chain- Production of ATP

SUMMARY Stages of Aerobic Cellular Respiration According to the equation, what is the energy source? Glucose (C6H12O6) – primary fuel for cellular respiration Where does the carbon dioxide come from? Breakdown of glucose How many molecules of water are created? 6 The oxygen on the reactant side forms which molecule on the product side? Water (H2O)

Summary Chemical Equation for Cellular Respiration Stage of cellular respiration Energy going into the stage What is happening to the energy Energy going out of the stage Glycolysis Krebs Cycle Electron Transport Chain Chemical Equation for Cellular Respiration
