Arch205 building construction Windows- glazed curtain wall, skylights Prepared By: joshima v.m.

Glazed curtain walls Glazed curtain walls are exterior nonloadbearing walls consisting of vision glass or opaque spandrel panels supported by metal framing. They may be categorized according to their method of assembly.

Glazed curtain walls Stick System  In the stick system, mullions (sticks) are fabricated in the shop and installed and glazed in the field. Sticks are placed between floors vertically to support individual components, such as horizontal mullions, glazing, and spandrels. Loads are transferred through connections at floors or columns.

Glazed curtain walls Unit Panel System For large or labor-intensive projects, unit panel systems may be a cost-effective alternative to the stick system. In the unit panel system, panels are fabricated and assembled at the shop, and may be glazed there as well. The panels are then taken to the field, where they are attached to a building structure.

Glazed curtain walls Unit and Mullion System Similar to the stick system, mullions are the first tube to be installed in the unit and mullion system. Spandrel and glazing, however, are inserted into the stick system as a complete unit.

Glazed curtain walls Column Cover and Spandrel System While column cover and spandrel systems are similar to unit and mullion systems, they differ in that the building frame is emphasized with column covers, which act as sticks.

Glazed curtain walls Point Loaded Structural Glazing System  In this system, the vertical framing member can be comprised of stick, cable, or another custom structure behind the glass. Glass is supported by a system of four-point brackets, and joints are sealed with silicone.

Double skin facade Double-skin facades, also known as smart facades, are cladding systems designed to conserve and reduce the energy needed for heating, cooling, and lighting a building by integrating passive solar collection, solar shading, day lighting, thermal resistance, and natural ventilation into its assembly. The assembly usually consists of a double- or triple-glazed unit on the interior, an air space for harvesting heat and containing adjustable shading devices to control solar radiation and daylighting, an exterior layer of safety or laminated glazing with operable panels and sometimes energy-generating photovoltaic technologies.

skylights Glazed openings in a roof allow daylight to enter an interior space from above. This efficient and cost-effective source of lighting can be in place of or in addition to the normal daylighting from windows. The frames for skylights and sloped glazing systems should incorporate an internal guttering system to collect and drain water and moisture through weep holes to the exterior.

Types of skylight Pre-assembled skylights that come in standard sizes. Made of glass or plastic glazing with metal frames.

Roof windows for installation in a sloping roof. These windows either pivot or swing open for ventilation and cleaning.

Sloped glazing systems are glazed curtain walls made to serve as pitched glass roofs. Glazing may be of acrylic or polycarbonate plastic or of wired, laminated, heat-strengthened glass.
