Shading Devices Prepared by: Joshima V.M.

2 Shading devices In order to control sun penetration to the interior of buildings it is important to provide exterior shading as a part of the architectural envelope design. Such shading devices can be attached to the building.

3 Shading can be achieved by the articulation and disposition of the building floors to create overhangs.

4 Traditional interior blinds or drapes merely block the glare of the sun, but still allow the heat to enter the interior space.

5 Sun path for Oman

6 North Side Elevation The north elevation essentially does not require shading because except in the summer months in the early morning and late evening, no sun penetration occurs. At this time of day the sun angle is so low that horizontal projections would be useless as shading devices.

7 South Side elevation The south elevation allows for the easiest control of solar energy. Shading devices are normally designed as horizontal projections above the windows.

8 The length of the projection is determined as a geometric function of the height of the window and the angle of elevation of the sun at solar noon. Such shading devices can be designed to completely eliminate sun penetration in the summer and allow for complete sun penetration during the winter when such is desired for passive heat gain.

9 East and West elevation
The sun angles in the morning and afternoon are low enough to preclude shading using overhangs. The morning sun is normally cooler and less offensive than the heat and glare of the late afternoon sun.

10 The east and west elevations are both difficult to shade “architecturally”. So can be shaded by landscaping.

11 Shading devices The types of shading devices are divided into fixed and movable. Movable shading devices may include awnings, hinged extensions and vegetation.

12 Horizontal shading devices
Horizontal shading devices are suited to southern exposures. Roof overhangs can also easily be used to shade southern exposures on low rise buildings. This is perhaps the most economical and potentially aesthetically pleasing solution for residential applications.

15 Vertical shading devices
Where sun is hitting the facade from a south- easterly or south-westerly direction, vertical devices can effectively block the sun. Eggcrates are often used on non true south facing elevations as well.

17 Typical materials used include;
Many different materials may be used for the shading device depending on the performance and appearance required. Typical materials used include; Metals (solid and perforated) Timber Glass (coated/tinted, fritted, sand blasted, photovoltaic) Concrete

18 Assignment Horizontal shading devices- Afnan, Asma, Sherifa, Zakiya
Veritical Shading devides- Khloud, Sumaia, matwa, Intisar. Cavity wall- Moosa, Mahmood, Assa. Building orientation- Misdar Window orientation- Maya

19 Horizontal shading devices
Make a wall of 3mx3m in 1:10 scale. Make a window opening of size 1.5x1.5m on the wall. in class after discussion Make one type of horizontal shading device.

20 Vertical shading devices
Make a wall of 3mx3m in 1:10 scale. Make a window opening of size 1.5x1.5m on the wall. in class after discussion Make one type of vertical shading device.

21 Cavity wall Make a cavity wall of 3mx3m in 1:10 scale.
Make a window of size 1.5mx1.5m. Double glazed window- Moosa Normal with only air gap in the cavity.- Mahmood Insulation in the cavity.-Assa

22 Double glazed windows

24 Building orientation Make a site of size 15mx10m in a scale of 1:50.
Make a rectangular building of size 10mx6m. Use light color to make the building. (do not fix the building) In class Show north direction. Orient the building with short walls facing east and west. Show the solar exposure on the walls.

25 Window orientation Make a site of size 15mx10m in a scale of 1:50.
In class Make a rectangular building of size 10mx6m. (do not fix the building). Cut window openings with less no of windows in the south and west walls. Maximum openings on the north wall.
