A System of Assessments for College and Career Readiness For the Anaheim Union High School District Prepared and presented by Dr. Paul Sevillano, Assistant Superintendent Education and Cynthia Vasquez Petitt, Assessment and Evaluation Analyst Presented to the Board of Trustees February 13, 2014

Assessment Presentation Presentation Objectives: To provide an update on the transition to the new State Assessment System: California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)- Spring 2014 To provide an update on the development of a system of assessments for College and Career Readiness

Transitioning to California’s New Assessment System- Spring 2014 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)

Required State Assessments for the 2013–14 School Year Most paper/pencil testing has been eliminated except: Science in grades 5, 8, and 10, including CST, CMA, and CAPA California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) for ELA and Math in grades 2 through 11 (special education) Spring 2014 Smarter Balanced Field Test for English–language arts (ELA) and math in grades 3–8, and grade 11 (and a select sample in grades 9 and 10)

Additional State Assessments for the 2013–14 School Year California Standards Test will be used for the Early Assessment Program (EAP) in grade 11: Voluntary for students, all students encouraged to participate Scores for individuals only–will not produce school, district, or state-level reports from these assessments Standards-Based Tests in Spanish(STS) in grades 2–11 Voluntary for LEAs to administer to Spanish-speaking English learners enrolled less than 1 year

The Smarter Balanced Spring 2014 Field Test BENEFITS: Students will have hands-on experience with the functionality of a computer-based assessment. Teachers and administrators will gain valuable exposure to administration logistics during a trial run. Local educational agencies (LEAs) will benefit from having learned where technology gaps may exist, and then can fully prepare for operational assessments.

The Smarter Balanced Spring 2014 Field Test Will take place April 7–May 16, 2014. Will assess students in grades 7 , 8, and 11 in AUHSD. Grade 9 : Students at Cypress will participate in a scientific sample. Special education students who participate in CAPA do not take the field test; Hope students will participate in a national pilot this spring. English Learners who have been enrolled less than one year do not take the English Language Arts portion but do participate in the Math portion.

The Smarter Balanced Spring 2014 Field Test Test will be approximately 3 ½ to 4 hours long. No paper-and-pencil version will be available. No student, school, or district score reports will be produced. Results will not be factored into any state or federal accountability calculations.

Smarter Balanced Practice and Training Tests Allows students, parents, and staff to become familiar with the online testing environment before taking the spring 2014 Field Test and future operational tests. College and Career Readiness Students Will Graduate College and Career Ready

Four Keys to College and Career Readiness

The Early Assessment Program (EAP) The EAP is an academic preparation program designed to help students meet college readiness standards in English Language Arts and mathematics before entry to any of the CSU campuses and participating community colleges.

The Early Assessment Program (EAP) This transition year, 11th grade students will participate via the CSTs in ELA, Algebra II and Summative Math. Results will be reported in August to determine if students are “ready, conditionally ready, or not ready” for college entry-level English and math courses.

The Early Assessment Program (EAP) Conditionally Ready students will receive guidance in course placement that will prepare them in their senior year for college readiness. Enrollment in senior level approved courses and passing with a C or better will exempt students from college placement exams.

Deeper Learning in the Classroom Getting Ready for College, Careers, and the Common Core: What Every Educator Needs to Know by Dr. David T. Conley

Deeper Learning in the Classroom Students are full partners in the learning process and take ownership of their learning. Teachers and students know how learning will be assessed. Assessments will be consistent with the goals of the course. Students are presented with challenging tasks that gauge their competency with content and concepts. Students reflect on their own thinking and engagement to continuously improve.

Assessing College and Career Readiness A college and career ready student possesses the content knowledge, strategies, skills, and techniques necessary to be successful in a postsecondary setting. Common Core Smarter Balanced Assessments assess content knowledge and contain literacy anchor standards for College and Career readiness in writing, reading, speaking, and math. Assessment of college and career readiness is complex and requires districts to develop system of assessments.
