Family Structure There are many types of families, each with unique characteristics. Biological children are born into a family. Adopted children become family members through a legal process.

Trends Affecting Families All families are affected by societal trends. More people find themselves caring for aging parents and their children at the same time. Advances in technology make life both easier and more complicated. 7

Section 3.2 Parenting Skills Parents use a variety of parenting styles to raise children and deal with the responsibilities of being a parent.

Children’s Needs Effective parenting sometimes means learning from mistakes. Children whose needs are not met suffer from deprivation. deprivation A lack of the critical needs and encouraging environment that are essential for physical, emotional, and intellectual well-being.

Parenting Styles There are three main parenting styles: authoritarian, assertive-democratic, and permissive. No one parenting style works best with all children. Which parenting style or styles have your parents used?
