Presentation transcript:

October 1, 2014 SWBAT develop their revising and editing skills to write their essays. Initial Activity: Trade your essay with a partner and look for spelling and grammar errors to correct each others papers. You have 5 minutes.

Word of the day: Transition words – words that show the relationships among the ideas in a piece of writing to help guide readers through a story or an argument. Example – however, therefore, since, finally

How do we revise and edit our essay? Organization and Clarity Establish the narrator and setting at the beginning of the story. Establish the decision that must be made in the middle of the story. Organize events in a clear and logical order, and include phrases and clauses that connect events. Explain how the conflict or decision is resolved, and what the narrator learns, at the end of the narrative. -Evidence and Reasoning Establish and maintain a consistent point of view. Develop the conflict and resolution by describing the thoughts and actions of key characters. Develop characters and plot with narrative techniques such as simile, metaphor, and sensory details.

Revising and editing our essays cont. Language and Conventions Use transition words and clauses and phrases to connect events in the narrative and show the passage of time. Vary sentences throughout the narrative. Correctly spell all words and use punctuation and capitalization correctly. Look through your checklist and see if you have all of the steps listed. Circle the rating you feel applies from 1-4.

Work Period: Continue to use your graphic organizers to write your essays. Make corrections also from your revising and editing worksheets.

Summary: Today we learned about revising and editing. What are some grows and glows we can take from this lesson we learned today?
