Initial activity: Brainstorm how important decisions impact a person’s life.

2 Word of the day Narrative Text – describes experiences and events from the point of view of a narrator. Example – A narrative text is often written in the first-person point of view.

3 What are parts of an essay?
A narrative describes experiences and uses a series of events in time as its text structure. The introduction engages the reader by establishing the setting and introducing the narrator and/or characters. Find the clues that describe the narrator’s point of view. The body uses description, figurative language, and transition words and phrases to develop characters and events. Find the clues that describe the challenge the narrator faces. Find the transition words. The conclusion follows from narrated events and contains the resolution. Describe the resolution and what the narrator learned. Review the graphic organizer and write down any questions you have about the outline of each paragraph.

4 Work period Fill out your graphic organizer to outline your essay on an important event or decision. It can be real or imagined. What understanding or insight did this experience reveal?

5 Summary Today we learned what components create an essay. Write down one question you have about your essay.

6 Homework Read a narrative passage by Sonia Sotomayor and fill out a chart that illustrates all of the parts of a narrative.
