A Study Of 1st Timothy Lesson #1 1 Timothy 1:1-11

A Reminder & A Charge (1:3-4) 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia — remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables & endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith

TALMUD: Two divisions MISHNA GEMARA The Hebrew text of the Oral Law A commentary on the Mishna. Developed between AD 200 to 500, a treasury of information & comment. The Pharisees had their own brand of the Mishna in Jesus' day

RASHI Commentary on the Gemara (the commentary on Jewish Oral Law) which interpreted the older rulings in the light of the new experience of life in Christian Europe in the Middle Ages. JUDAISM IS KEPT ALIVE BY ORAL LAW AND TRADITION AND NOT BY THE LAW OF MOSES!

TALMUD: Aramaic: “Learning” Jewish Oral Law, with rabbinical commentaries – not Scripture. HALAKAH The legal sections of the TALMUD AGGADA The poetical digressions, legends & anecdote Used to trouble the church!

A Reminder & A Charge (1:3-4) 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia — remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables & endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith

Proper Motives: Teachers (1:5) 5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, & from sincere faith,

Improper Motives (1:6-7) 6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.

Proper Use Of The Law (1:8-11) 8 But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, 9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless & insubordinate, for the ungodly & for sinners, for the unholy & profane, for murderers of fathers & murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, & if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.
