3 Establishing Timothy’s Authority Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope; to Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. (v1-2) As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus, in order that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines… (v3) This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son… (v18) No thanksgiving!

4 The Ephesian Heresy - Judaism 1:7 “Teachers of law” Used only of Pharisees (Luke 5:17; Acts 5:34) 1:4“Myths” “Jewish myths” (Titus 1:14) 1:4“Genealogies” Reference to apocryphal Jewish books like Enoch and Jubilees, also writings like those of Philo 1:4 “mere speculation” (“minister questions”) John 3:25 “a question…about purifying” Acts 15:2, 7 dispute over circumcision of Gentile believers Acts 25:20 questions of Jewish law 4:3 “Abstaining from foods” 6:10 “love of money” “the Pharisees, who were lovers of money” (Luke 16:14)

5 Effects of the Heresy 1:6 “Fruitless discussion” It achieves nothing of spiritual value 1:7 “Confident assertions” Humility and proof replaced by a dogmatic forcefulness 1:4 “mere speculation” (“minister questions”) Leading to division and arguments over nothing. 1:4 “rather than godly edifying” “Knowledge makes arrogant (puffed up), but love edifies” (1 Cor 8:1) Balloon vs. Building “But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” (v5)

7 The Untrustworthy Made Trustworthy 1:11 I have been entrusted with the Gospel 1:12 He counted me trustworthy (or made me trustworthy) 1:13 Even though I was acting in an untrustworthy way (“did it in unbelief”) 1:15 This is all because of the trustworthy saying

8 The Untrustworthy Made Trustworthy 1:11 I have been entrusted with the Gospel 1:12 He counted me trustworthy (or made me trustworthy) 1:13 Even though I was acting in an untrustworthy way (“did it in unbelief”) 1:15 This is all because of the trustworthy saying “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord because he counted me, who was untrustworthy, as trustworthy! Through his strength, he has put me to work!”

9 Why was Paul Shown Mercy? v13-14 And yet I was shown mercy, because: 1)I acted ignorantly in unbelief and… 2)the grace of our Lord was more than abundant… v16 And yet for this reason I found mercy: 3)in order that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience, as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.

10 Paul’s progressive self-assessment “For I am the least of the apostles, who am not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I laboured even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.” (1 Cor. 15:9-10) “To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ,” (Eph. 3:8) “It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.” (1 Tim. 1:15)

11 Paul as Pharisee and Tax-collector (Luke 18) v9 “He also told this parable to certain ones who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt:” Exactly like the self-righteous false teachers in Ephesus v11 “The Pharisee” Paul a former Pharisee v11 “I thank you…” “I thank Christ Jesus…” v11 “swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax-gatherer” “Lawless, rebellious, ungodly, sinners, unholy, profane, those who kill their fathers or mothers, murderers…” v13 “God, be merciful to me, the sinner!” “sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.” v14 “this man went down to his house justified” “He considered me faithful”

12 Why was Paul Shown Mercy? v13-14 And yet I was shown mercy, because: 1)I acted ignorantly in unbelief and… 2)the grace of our Lord was more than abundant… v16 And yet for this reason I found mercy: 3)in order that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience, as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
