8 1 Timothy 1:3-11 Purpose of the commandment is love… (1:5) ▫Agape – selfless, sacrificial love ▫Contrast this with the what false doctrines, fables and endless genealogies cause. From a pure heart (1:5) ▫All actions flow from the heart (Prov. 4:23) From a good conscience (1:5) ▫An unclear conscience renders the heart impure and the love will be insincere From sincere faith (1:5) ▫Genuine and not a “pretended” faith with ulterior motive

9 1 Timothy 1:3-11 Some have strayed and turned to idle talk (1:6) ▫Strayed from pure heart, good conscience and sincere faith ▫Idle talk (think back to verse 4) Desiring to be teachers of the law (1:7) ▫Scribes took great pride in being teachers, but they misunderstood the law Not understanding what they say or affirm (1:7) ▫Jews were often arrogant and boastful, yet they didn’t understand ▫Matt 22:29, Rom. 2:17-24

10 1 Timothy 1:3-11 Law is good if used lawfully (1:8) ▫It accomplished it’s objective ▫Must be used for original and true intent Law not made for a righteous person (1:9) But for ….. 11 1 Timothy 1:3-11 According to the glorious gospel … committed to my trust (1:11) ▫Harmony between purpose of the law and the gospel Paul preached to them ▫Responsibility given to Paul on road to Damascus

12 Summary Paul was an apostle with authority from God Timothy was a True son of Paul in the faith Timothy was to make sure the Ephesians ▫Taught no other doctrine, Didn’t indulge fables and endless genealogies ▫These result in disputes and not edification The purpose of this is sincere love, but some have strayed The law serves it’s purpose if used lawfully It’s purpose is to reveal sin and turn the sinner from it
