The Rise of Democracy Ancient Greece

Timeline of Ancient Greek Governments

Monarchy- Rule by King or Queen (Unlimited Government) In a monarchy, the governing power is in the hands of one person, usually a king or a queen. In ancient Greek settlements, queens were not allowed to govern.

Oligarchy- Rule by a Few (Unlimited Government) In an oligarchy, the ruling power is in the hands of a few people.

Tyranny- Rule by Dictator (Unlimited Government) In a tyranny, the ruling power is in the hands of one person who is not a lawful king. A tyranny is sometimes called a dictatorship. A tyrant is another name for a dictator.

Democracy- Rule by People (Limited Government) The government of Athens was a direct democracy. In that type of government, every citizen is allowed to vote on every issue. Unlike Athens, the United States is a representative democracy. In this type of government, people may vote for representatives who then decide issues on behalf of the people.
