Thesis statement: presents your position on the topic of your paper. Creating a thesis Thesis statement: presents your position on the topic of your paper. Usually about 1-2 sentences Found at the end of intro paragraph Be as clear as possible! Ensure the reader knows exactly what you will be talking about in your body paragraphs. Avoid vague, abstract words: get right to the point of what you will be discussing. Make specific references to your paper in particular. Think: why does this matter? Why should the reader want to read my paper?

Examples Weak thesis: Being a teenager is difficult. Strong thesis: Due to intense demands at school, pressure to participate in extracurricular activities, and frequent arguments among friends, being a teenager in today’s society is often a challenge. Weak thesis: The Harry Potter book series is more enjoyable than the movies. Strong thesis: Due to J.K. Rowling’s vivid imagery, strong characterization, and ability to craft suspense, the Harry Potter books are better crafted than the less-detailed films.

Practice Prompts (HW) Why is St. Francis Prep a well-respected school? What are the most effective ways to maintain good grades? Why are iPads beneficial in the classroom? Why is it important to incorporate religion into one’s life? How does one adjust well from middle school to high school?
