History of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Candler Field - 1930

Originally built on a 287-acre abandoned racetrack. Hartsfield (continued) Originally built on a 287-acre abandoned racetrack. Purpose was to provide airmail service from Macon, GA to Florida (10¢/ounce).

Mayor William Hartsfield Acknowledged for his leadership in making Atlanta an aviation (air travel) hub of the Southeast. Served for six terms (1937-1941 and 1942-1961) Hartsfield also helped lead the city in the area of civil rights. hired eight African American police officers for restricted duties, a move unheard of throughout most of the South. Atlanta became known as a city of racial moderation.

Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr. Served as mayor of Atlanta from 1962-1970 Continued peaceful integration. Removed “Colored” and “White” signs in Atlanta’s City Hall Integrated city government and fire departments New construction Public faculties Civil auditorium Skyscrapers and office buildings Brought sports to Atlanta
