Classifying Living Things Appreciation and Protection of Marine Animals

How can we categorize and organize our cell phones into groups?

How do scientists organize and classify living things? Size and shapes of organism? DNA similarities? Lifestyle- i.e feeding habits, role in the environment? How Do Scientist Classify Organisms?

Red panda and Panda bear

New DNA evidence now classifies the red panda as more closely related to a raccoon (rodent) vs. a bear)

Linnaeus System of Classification Dear General (Most Inclusive) King Phillip Came Over From Specific (LEAST Inclusive- ONLY ONE TYPE OF ORGANISM! ) Germany Saturday

2 part scientific name = Genus and Species organism belongs to Only 1 type!

Carl Linnaeus= Father of Taxonomy Dear Taxonomy = the study of classifying organisms and their relationships to one another Each category is called a TAXON (taxa = plural) King Phillip Came Over From Germany Saturday

BONUS POINTS: Correctly identify the taxa Using your phones, work with your partner to find and record the scientific classification categories of a smooth hammerhead shark.

BONUS POINTS: Correctly classify a Smooth hammerhead shark Domain: _____________ Kingdom: ____________ Phylum: _____________ Class: _______________ Order: _______________ Family: _______________ Genus: _______________ Species: _______________ *Scientific name? ______________

BONUS POINTS: Correctly classify an Hammer head shark Domain: Eukarya (Eukaryotes have nucleus in their cell) Kingdom: Animalia (Animals move and are heterotrophs) Phylum: Chordata (Chordata have a backbone and spinal cord) Class: Chondrichthyes (Cartilage fish with paired fins, scales: rays, sharks, etc) Order: Carcharhiniformes (sharks) Family: Sphyrnidae (shark with distinct hammer shaped head) Genus: Sphyrna Species: Zygaena (scientific name = Sphyrna zygaena)

Classify your FAVORITE MARINE ANIMAL! Domain: _____________ Kingdom: ____________ Phylum: _____________ Class: _______________ Order: _______________ Family: _______________ Genus: _______________ Species: _______________ *Scientific name? ______________
