Lesson 4 YM Rank Structure Special thanks and credit to Mr. Chris Chinchilla and Quartz Hill Young Marines

Program Requirements PO.2 – General Knowledge EO.3 – Identify and explain key features of the Young Marine program. TLO.d – Properly state a Young Marine rank.

What is “Rank?” Rank: A position in the hierarchy of the Armed Forces. Example: I hold the rank of sergeant in the Marine Corps.

Hierarchy Hierarchy: A system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority. Example: In the hierarchy of Boot Camp, Registered Adult Staff are the highest, Recruit Instructors are in the middle, and recruits are the lowest. This develops proper respect and also identifies responsibilities. Adult Staff are responsible for making sure that training is properly supervised and supported. Recruit Instructors are responsible for conducting training. Recruits are responsible for completing training. This hierarchy ensures that the job gets done!

A hierarchy shows levels of leadership. Registered Adult Staff Advanced Young Marines Senior YMs Junior YMs Basic YMs Recruit Instructors Recruits A hierarchy shows levels of leadership. Rank identifies authority in the hierarchy. We will discuss ranks within this hierarchy shortly.

Marine Corps Rank Marine Corps Ranks have Legal Authority

 The Coolest Rank in the World: There’s only one! Marine Corps Rank  The Coolest Rank in the World: There’s only one! Billeted ranks: The link between officers and enlisted—they determine what can be done Staff Non-commissioned Officers: The planners and supervisors—they manage administration and logistics, and often lead the overall charge Non-commissioned Officers: The Backbone of the Marine Corps—they get the job done, come hell or high water Enlisted Ranks: The worker bees—they do what they’re told and they do it well

Young Marine Rank Structure Institutional or Traditional Authority Our ranks are based on the Marine Corps rank structure and hierarchy, but they do not have legal authority.

Flashcards! You will be making THREE sets of flashcards: Label one with the full name of each rank – Young Marine Private Label one with the abbreviation for each rank – YM/Pvt Cut and paste an insignia on the last card

Matching Game With a partner or your team: Choose two sets of cards. Mix them up, and lay them all face down. Take turns flipping over cards until you’ve matched two cards together. Take out matching pairs. The one with the most matches when the cards run out wins. Play at least two times using different card combinations (rank & abbreviation, rank and insignia, abbreviation and insignia, etc.)

Kahoot! Kahoot! Is an online quiz game. You’ll work alone or with a partner or team to match the correct ranks with their abbreviation or picture. Take out your device and go to this website: https://kahoot.it Type in the game PIN. Choose your name wisely!

Pop Quiz! Just kidding! Now that you’ve had some practice, take some time to quiz each other on the Young Marine ranks. Choose one or two sets of flashcards to go through with a partner. Hold up a card and have your partner state the proper rank that goes along with it. Make sure to remember which cards you struggle with so that you study those extra!

Reflection Which ranks are the hardest to remember? Why do you think that is? What can you do to help yourself remember the tough ranks?

Final Remarks This information will be on your quiz and final test. Make sure to study! Here is a quizlet link if you prefer to study on the computer: https://quizlet.com/_4rkquw
