The Health & Social Care Act 2012 “The patient voice” D D D The Health & Social Care Act 2012 Established as part of the Health & Social Care Act 2012, Healthwatch was set up as the independent ‘consumer champion’ for health and social care services across England. Our role is to cordinate and most of all reflect the views of citizens from all sections of the community, so that they are represented, heard and listened to in decisions that effect the provision of health and social care. We are independent from the council and NHS so we are the independent voice of the public. We have a seat on the health and well being board, we are a non voting member of the governing body of the CCG and we have a seat on the scrutiny committee, all of which allows us to have a role in promoting public health and in tackling health inequalities. Our main challenge to commissioners. comes when we don’t believe that the public are being consulted or engaged in the changes that are taking place in the health and social care economy of Croydon

“The patient voice” D D D Every local authority has to have a Healthwatch by law, as part of their commitment under the Act. There are 152 local Healthwatch organisations across England and every London borough has its own. In addition, a parent organisation Healthwatch England provides support, and has a seat on the Board of the Care Quality Commission (CQC). One of our roles is to feed local intelligence to HWE so that they can use this to

“The patient voice” D D D Representation… Healthwatch has a permanent seat on the local Health and Wellbeing Board, where important decisions about local services are made. Healthwatch also sits on a number of other Boards and Committees across the Borough, London and England. The aim is to assist citizens and communities to have a strong and co-ordinated voice so that they are better able to influence and challenge the provision of health and social care services in their area.

Why Healthwatch Croydon? Works to help Croydon residents get the best out of their health and social care services. Ensures that the overall views and experiences of people in Croydon are HEARD and taken seriously at a local and national level.

“The patient voice” D D D Our intelligence… Healthwatch Croydon has so far collected over 18,000 views about local services. We receive around 300 stories each week. The aim is to assist citizens and communities to have a strong and co-ordinated voice so that they are better able to influence and challenge the provision of health and social care services in their area.

Strategic Priorities Improve the way we obtain the views of people about their needs for, and their experiences of, local care services (including the seldom heard). Further develop our ability to influence the public and our partners. To increase public awareness of the health and social care services available to them by providing information and signposting service for the people of Croydon. To improve the effectiveness of patient involvement in Croydon - provision of information, engagement, consultation and participation.

Our eight consumer principles “The patient voice” D D D Our eight consumer principles What do people expect when it comes to managing their health and care? As a consumer champion our national Healthwatch organisation has developed 8 consumer principles based on what people told them they expect when it comes to managing health and care.

“The patient voice”

Working in partnership - the range of stakeholders local Healthwatch can influence The aim is to assist citizens and communities to have a strong and co-ordinated voice so that they are better able to influence and challenge the provision of health and social care services in their area.

Where does Enter and View apply? “The patient voice” Where does Enter and View apply? The guiding principle: the legislation allows Enter and View activity to be undertaken on premises where health and social care is publically funded: NHS Trusts NHS Foundation Trusts Local Authorities Primary medical services, such as GPs Primary dental services, such as dentists Primary Ophthalmic services, such as opticians Pharmaceutical services such as community pharmacists Premises which have been are contracted by Local Authorities or the NHS to provide health or care services, such as adult social care homes and day-care centres. The aim is to assist citizens and communities to have a strong and co-ordinated voice so that they are better able to influence and challenge the provision of health and social care services in their area.

What is Enter and View? “The patient voice” Local Healthwatch have powers of entry, and providers have a duty to allow entry, if local Healthwatch operate under the principles of the legislation set out below: To go into health and social care premises to hear and see how the consumer experiences the service To collect the views of service users (patients and residents) at the point of service delivery To collect the views of carers and relatives of service users To observe the nature and quality of services To collate evidence-based feedback To report to providers, regulators, Local Authority and NHS commissioners and quality assurers, the public, Healthwatch England and any other relevant partners To develop insights and recommendations across multiple visits to inform strategic decision making at local and national levels. The aim is to assist citizens and communities to have a strong and co-ordinated voice so that they are better able to influence and challenge the provision of health and social care services in their area.
