Fleet Safety Policy College Requirements Current valid driver’s license Pass the motor vehicle record review Review of driving record – 5-7 business days Notified via email – approved or not eligible For 12 passenger vans, your driving record will be reviewed annually. At least 6 years driving experience and 24 years old Complete 12-passenger van specific training

Fleet Safety Policy In eligible to drive if you had the following: 3 or more moving violations and/or accidents in the most recent 3 years 2 or more moving violations and/or accidents in the most recent year A “major conviction” within the last 5 years. “Major conviction” include: Driving while intoxicated or ‘under the influence (DWI or DUI) Leaving the scene of an accident Careless or reckless driving violations Homicide or assault through use of a motor vehicle Attempting to elude a police officer Drivers who have a suspended or revoked license or those who have had 3 or more license suspensions in the past

12-Passenger Van Safety General Safety Rules Familiarize yourself with the controls and adjust mirrors, seat, etc. Check tires to ensure inflated to proper pressure – improperly inflated tires and tread wear can lead to handling problems 0r a blowout No alcohol, drugs or tobacco consumed by any person in van (before or during use) No more passengers than seatbelts Adhere to all traffic laws - tickets, parking fees, and tolls are users responsibility All occupants must wear seatbelts Drivers – use of electronics and headphones prohibited Improperly inflated tires and tread wear can lead to handling problems or a blowout.

12-Passenger Van Safety 12 passenger van specific operating rules Front seat passenger must act as an assistant – navigation, radio handling, passenger needs, or cell phone use Driver fatigue Never drive if tired If driving time exceeds 3 hours – two authorized drivers required Vehicle loading Roof- top loads or luggage prohibited In-vehicle luggage and equipment prohibited above seat level Maintain safe speed and distance for road conditions – your speed and distance will be different from a regular sized passenger vehicle

12-Passenger Van Safety Rollovers – more likely to occur in 12-passenger vans due to Center of Gravity – moves upward and toward rear of van as the number of passengers increase making handling different than cars Speed and Road Conditions – increase with speeds over 50 mph and on curved roads Improper Loading – the more people, luggage, and equipment, the greater the risk of rollover No luggage or equipment on top of van No luggage or equipment above seat height Do no block driver’s view with luggage or equipment

12-Passenger Van Safety Breakdowns – what do I do? If and when safe to do so, move the vehicle to the side of the road Turn on your emergency flashers and interior lights Call the rental company for assistance

12-Passenger Van Safety Accidents If and when safe to do, move the vehicle to the side of the road. Turn on your flashers and interior lights. Call 911 to report the accident and request emergency assistance Call the rental company for assistance Take pictures. Obtain insurance, registration, and driver’s information Provide Facilities phone number as contact number

Summary Must be registered and approved to drive 12-passenger vans Always check van for safety issues before departing Adjust mirrors and seat prior to first use of van Follow the safe operating procedures Drive defensively to avoid rollovers Report all accidents to your department head or designee
