Presentation transcript:

PowerPoint 7 introduces the idea of hot temperature. Questions to promote discussion Where is Guzzler? What can you see on the beach? How do you think Guzzler feels? What sounds does he hear? What are the seagulls doing? What is Guzzler wearing? How can you tell from the picture that Guzzler is hot? Why is he hot? What activity is Guzzler going to do? What colours do you see in the picture? Integration with Maths:: How many shells did Guzzler collect? Which is the largest shell? Which is the smallest shell? Find 2 shells that are the same, etc PAIRED ACTIVITY: Guzzler has brought a lot of things in his bag. Can you guess what is in the bag? With your talking partner, think of all the items Guzzler needs for his day on the beach. Share ideas with the class. (Next 2 slides reveal what Guzzler has packed in his bag.)

HELP GUZZLER TO SELECT A SUNHAT FOR THE BEACH. Questions to promote discussion Why do we need to wear a hat in the sun? Does a sunhat keep you warm or keep you cool? Is it good to have a peak on a sunhat? Why? Which hat has a peak? Is it good to have a wide brim on a sunhat? Why? Which hats have wide brims? Which hat has the widest brim? Which hat protects your neck and shoulders? What fabrics are sunhats made from? Why? Name a fabric that would not be used in a sunhat. Which is the best hat for the beach? Why? Which is the least suitable hat for the beach? Why? Which hat will Guzzler pack for the beach?

HELP GUZZLER TO PACK FOR A DAY AT THE BEACH. Guzzler has already chosen his sunhat. Help him to decide what other items he needs to take to the beach. Allow for debate if children raise issues with certain items: Boots?- perhaps he may wish to climb rocks Coat? - the weather may change? etc. Questions to promote discussion Why should Guzzler leave his iPod at home? (No power for the dock. Even if the iPod is charged, it may become full of sand on the beach.) Games console - no energy available on the beach. Also too sandy. Stress importance of water, snacks, suntan cream, sunhat, sunglasses, t-shirt.

GUZZLER THINKS OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE BEACH STRESS SAFETY ASPECT OF ALL ACTIVITIES ON BEACH THROUGHOUT LESSON - ONLY WITH ADULT SUPERVISION Guzzler is full of energy and thinks of lots of activities he would like to do on the beach What games/activities do you think he is thinking about? PAIRED ACTIVITY: With your talk buddy, see how many activities you can think of that are suitable for the beach. Share with whole class.

WHAT BEACH ACTIVITIES DID GUZZLER THINK ABOUT? Can you name each activity? Did you guess some correctly? Did you think of lots of other activities? Are all of these activities suitable for a hot day? Why? Why not? Guzzler decided that he needed to do activities that would keep him cool. Go to the next slide to find out how Guzzler plans to keep cool in the hot sun.

HOW DOES GUZZLER PLAN TO STAY COOL IN THE SUN? What activities do you think Guzzler is thinking about? What can he do to stay cool? PAIRED ACTIVITY: With your talk buddy, see how many ways you can think of to stay cool on the beach. Share with whole class.

HOW DOES GUZZLER PLAN TO STAY COOL IN THE SUN? What activities did Guzzler think about? Did you guess some of these activities? Did you think of some other 'cool' activities? What else can Guzzler do to stay cool?

SORTING ACTIVITY Decide which items go into each container Activities that keep us cool on the beach Activities that do not keep us cool on the beach Allow for some debate if issues arise e.g. eating can give us energy and warm us but some foods that have lots of water/juice can cool us down if eaten cold walking will warm us up but paddling in the water's edge can cool us down playing ball can warm us but playing ball with an adult in the water can keep us cool

SORTING ACTIVITY Did you match the items to the correct container Activities that keep us cool on the beach Activities that do not keep us cool on the beach Discussion Q: Why are some activities placed across both containers?

GUZZLER STAYS COOL ON THE BEACH. Questions to promote discussion Does Guzzler look hot or cold? How do you know? What is Guzzler doing to stay cool? (Shade, sunhat, sunglasses, ice-cream, water, grapes.) What is he eating? Can he leave the ice-cream cone down while he eats something else? Why not? What is he using as a plate to keep the sand off the grapes? (Frisbee) How many other snacks are in the basket? Name them. Do these snacks keep Guzzler warm or cool? Can you select another cooling snack for Guzzler's plate? What food is the seagull eating for energy? Why is Guzzler not playing ball? What did he play with before sitting in the shade? What is causing Guzzler's kite to fly in the hot weather? How is Guzzler drying his swimming trunks? How many shells did Guzzler collect?
