1 Soltan Sun Ready 2017 Teacher notes for PowerPoint
This assembly requires the following resources: Two bottles of sun cream Two chairs Two hats Two pairs of adult sunglasses Two umbrellas A box to place all of these in

2 Are You Sun Ready? Ask the children, ‘Who has ever had sunburn?’
Explain that sunburn is something we all need to avoid. We’ll find out why in a moment.

3 Tanai’s Story Introduce the video:
This is the story of a girl who loves football but missed the biggest match of the season. Video: Sun-Ready-Tanai-story

4 Sunburn can damage your skin
Summarise what happened to Tanai: She’s a girl who loves football She went to see her favourite team play, along with her friend It was a very hot day Tanai wore a sleeveless top and shorts She had to queue a long time for tickets and got sunburnt. The sunburn hurt so much that Tanai missed the match. Her mum told her that sunburn can damage your skin. Tanai had to stay inside for a week. She looked very red and uncomfortable, too.

5 The sun’s UV rays The sun gives off invisible rays
These are called ultraviolet rays Explain what UV rays are: The sun gives off light and heat but it also gives off something we can’t see: invisible UV rays. UV stands for ultraviolet.

6 UVA and UVB rays These rays can cause sunburn and damage our skin
Explain what UV rays are: The sun gives off light and heat but it also gives off something we can’t see: invisible UV rays. UV stands for ultraviolet.

7 How can we stop ourselves
getting sunburn? Ask the question on screen and see what ideas children have.

8 We need to be Sun Ready Explain how each object helps us to be sun ready: Sun cream: protects our skin from UVA and UVB rays Hat: provides shade and keeps the sun off our head and face Sunglasses: protects our eyes from the sun Long-sleeved top: keeps the sun off our skin Sun shade: staying in the shade means that UV rays can’t burn us. Stress that it can be any kind of shade – indoors, under a tree, in the shadow of a building etc.

9 Let’s get someone Sun Ready!
To make the assembly both memorable and fun, ask for two volunteers to come up onto the stage or front to be made sun ready. Ideally this should be two teachers – this will make the message more memorable. If teachers aren’t available/willing, ask for two children who are not shy. Then ask for two children to be the sun carers. Sit the two initial volunteers on the chairs facing the front Give the sun carers a bottle of sun cream each and ask them to apply this to the volunteers’ faces (check first if anyone is allergic or sensitive to sun cream). Encourage them to use plenty. Give the carers sunglasses to put on the seated volunteers Give out the hats to put on the seated volunteers Give out the umbrellas for the carers to hold over the seated volunteers to act as shade. Ask the audience to vote on who looks best. Give the four a big round of applause. Return the items to the box.

10 When it’s hot and sunny:
Wear a hat Cover up Stay in the shade Use sun cream Go through the list of what to do. Emphasise these points (if applicable): 1. You can also wear sunglasses outside at playtime. 2. The sun is hottest from 11-3 so at lunchtime play, stay in the shade if it’s a hot day. 3. Make sure you drink plenty of water.

11 A Sun Ready school! Explain that we want the whole school to be sun ready so we will be having special activities over the coming days to help us to remember how to stay safe in the sun and why it’s important.
