Today’s agenda Schedule Review / Attendance Complete Get to know you sheet during attendance Distribute and review our Syllabus Questions? Activity: Are words limiting? Website, if time permits

Are words limiting? Flip your Get to know you sheet to the blank side in Landscape position like this: ???

Numbers, measurements, values Observations ??? Qualitative Quantitative Root word: Quality Traits, Appearance, Description I have made a series of observations about a famous image. Following instructions, you will reproduce that image. The instructions that you will receive will be qualitative - what does that mean? Root word: Quantity Numbers, measurements, values

Observations An evergreen tree appears in the lower left. The tree begins at the end of the page and reaches nearly to the top edge. Another shorter, but fatter tree lies to the right of the first tree and overlaps it slightly. Beginning at the left, the horizon rises from left to right. On the left, the horizon is about 1/3 the way up the page from the bottom and ends on the right edge near the vertical center.

Sharing Observations (continued) Beneath the horizon at the center of the page is a steepled church with windows. Several other buildings appear below and to the right of the church.

Sharing Observations (continued) Above the horizon are four circles. The largest is in the upper right corner. The next smallest is directly above the fat tree. The final two circles, slightly smaller than the last circle, flank the taller tree. The circle to the left of the taller tree hangs slightly off the page. The last circle is right of the tree and slightly lower.

Do you recognize the famous painting that you just reproduced?

Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh Does your picture look like this? Although the painting depicts the view outside his sanitarium room window at night, it was painted from memory during the day. Since 1941 it has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Reproduced often, the painting is widely hailed as his magnum opus.

Often an image can convey more than words.
