Social Conditions: WWII

'alive' in the mind's eye: -" After entering the concentration camp, Bruno imagines the place which Shmuel lived is very good, all the people live in a happy family, the elders sitting in a rocking chair, they will talk about their childhood story with the children. It is very warm. He thinks the children here would play games together, play tennis or play football. He also thought that the concentration camp will have a store, there may be some small coffee shops or fruit and vegetable shops". -" But when he entered the concentration camp, he found that it is very different with his imagine. In the concentration camp, there are no adults sitting in the corridor rocking chair, and the children did not group play games. And there is not only a vegetable and fruit shop, nor a cafe like Berlin. Where the people sitting on a group of people, watching the ground, looks very sad. And they have one thing in common: all skinny, eyes dim, shaved bald, Bruno would like to also trouble here. "

Since he is only 9 he doesn't understand what goes on in the camp, or why he moved out of his house in berlin to this new house. He is a very curious boy and love to explore and discover new places. Quote: "It's so unfair. I don't see why I have to be stuck over here on this side of the fence where there's no one to talk to and no one to play with and you get to have dozens of friends and are probably playing for hours every day. I'll have to speak to Father about it." (Pg.111)

Shmuel Shmuel:  Shmuel is a child, a good listener, and he has the same exact birthday as Bruno. He and Bruno become good friends. , But Shmuel is  a Jewish prisoner in Out-With Quote: "I won't have anyone to talk to anymore when you're gone" (Pg. 196)
