How people start harmful alcohol use Alcohol is a trap: It may be very difficult to escape from it once you are trapped by it. Alcohol can trap good people as well as “bad” people Harms caused by alcohol to individuals, family and society How to help your father or brother or if they misuse alcohol How to support your class mates and neighbours if their father drinks too much What do you think about alcohol shops?

4 Suresh’s story> Suresh was a good man and he married a good person.

5 They were happy together and had children
They were happy together and had children. Suresh worked as a tree cutter

6 Suresh worked hard and loved his children. Is Suresh a good person?

7 One year there was no work in Suresh’s village
One year there was no work in Suresh’s village. He had to go away to find work. He could see his family only once a month. He felt lonely. But when he comes back he would bring toys for the children like all loving Dads

8 But Suresh was lonely. Where did some friends ask him to go to forget his loneliness?

9 At first Suresh said No. No. But one day he gave in
At first Suresh said No! No! But one day he gave in. It helped him forget his loneliness and have fun

10 The amount he spent on alcohol became more and more each day

11 Suresh was in a trap. He could not stop drinking even if he wanted to!

Role play 1 You are now 17 years old! You are studying plus 1 Teacher is a student who has money He wants a boy to come with him to buy alcohol. He will his friend a coward if he refuses One student acts as the friend. What will he say?

16 Can children love the father who does this
Can children love the father who does this? Children often get scared and hide from violent fathers. But What will fear make the father believe?

17 How can we break the cycle
Don’t talk to your father when he is drunk and violent. But what can you do the next day? Show love how? Talk Hug Take coffee Tell him your hurt and fear Tell him you love him Talk about spending time happily in the evenings without him being drunk. Talk about things you can do together. ROLE PLAY 2

For 7th standard. Alcohol shops. What are they doing to your community? What does the alcohol seller do when your family money is lost or your mother is beaten?

19 You cannot stop alcohol shops being in your village easily because powerful politicians support them. But you can ask alcohol shops to follow rules How? Don’t sell to children Don’t sell to those already drunk? Don’t sell to those who you already know drink too much or are ill or violent?

20 What if your neighbour’s father drinks and is violent or wasting family money?
