Nursing Mission Statement The Mission of the VCCS Nursing Programs is to provide affordable, community access to quality nursing education. The VCCS Nursing Programs prepare qualified students to provide safe, competent, entry-level nursing care in 21st century healthcare environments. Students are prepared to meet the ever-increasing complexity of the healthcare needs of the citizens of Virginia. May 25, 2018

Nursing Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) Students who complete the Associate Degree of Applied Science with a major in Nursing will be expected to: Provide patient-centered care promoting therapeutic relationships, caring behaviors and self-determination across the lifespan for diverse populations. Practice safe nursing care that minimizes risk of harm across systems and patient populations. Demonstrate nursing judgement through the use of clinical reasoning, the nursing process, and evidence-based practice in the provision of safe, quality care. Practice professional behaviors that encompass the legal/ethical framework while incorporating self-reflection, leadership and a commitment to recognize the value of life-long learning. Manage patient care through quality improvement processes, information technology, and fiscal responsibility to meet client needs and support organizational outcomes. Demonstrate principles of collaborative practice within the nursing and interdisciplinary teams fostering mutual respect and shared decision-making to achieve stated outcomes of care. May 25, 2018

Program Admission Requirements The program admission process is competitive. To be considered for admission, applicants must: Be admitted to NOVA. Be 18 years or older. Complete an online Nursing information session. Hold a high school diploma or General Educational Development Test certification (GED®). Take Math and English placement (if applicable) Qualify for MTH 154 through acceptable scores on the College math placement test. Have completed one unit of high school or college-level algebra and two units of science (1 unit of biology and 1 unit of chemistry) with a grade of "C" or higher. Complete PSY 230 with a grade of “C” or higher. Complete BIO 141 and BIO 142 with a grade of "C" or higher. Complete ENG 111 with a grade of "C" or higher. Complete SDV 101 Orientation to Healthcare or SDV elective with a grade of "C" or higher. May 25, 2018

Program Admission Requirements (continued) Grades for the above courses must be posted to student record prior to applying. Have minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. Students must take all 4 sections of the ATI-TEAS tests®: Reading, Math, Science and English. Students must receive a minimum composite score of 68% with a minimum Reading score of 76%. TEAS Exam can only be taken twice in an application cycle and may ONLY be taken at NOVA MEC Testing Center. Complete a criminal background check prior to applying (see application for information). Read the NOVA College Catalog related to the Nursing Program and NOVA Student Handbook. Students transferring from another nursing program must also submit a letter from the previous program’s Dean/Director attesting to your status in the previous nursing program. May 25, 2018

Criminal Background Clearance: Please Read Carefully The Commonwealth of Virginia may prohibit anyone from sitting for the Nursing Licensure Examination who has been convicted of: a felony, or crime(s) involving theft, drug offenses, and/or physical harm to another person. NOVA will not consider persons convicted of the above offenses for admission to the Nursing Program. NOVA’s Nursing Program is authorized to deny admission to the Nursing Program for anyone who has been arrested or charged with a misdemeanor or felony pertaining to controlled substances and who has been adjudicated guilty, or adjudication was withheld because of placement in a pre-trial intervention program or entered a plea of Nolo Contendere. Students with convictions who do not self-disclose the information are subject to dismissal from the program and will be denied admission to any other nursing and allied health programs at NOVA. General Nursing Program Information The Nursing Program is a 5 semester program which includes the pre-requisite courses as the first semester. Students must be available for lectures, Nursing Skills Lab, clinical placements, and testing a minimum of 3-4 days a week to include: days, evenings, nights and weekends. Lectures combine in-person and online teaching. Nursing students should not work more than 24 hours each week to accommodate the Nursing Program schedule and personal study time. Students should plan alternative and flexible child care arrangements. Students should also have alternative transportation options available to go to and from campus and clinical placements. Student should file their FAFSA application prior to the semester as financial aid is usually awarded 2 weeks before the start of classes. FAFSA is necessary for scholarships, grants and loans. Once conditionally accepted to the Nursing Program the student must: Attend a mandatory Nursing Program Orientation & MEC Library Orientation. Attain a physical health exam to include documentation of vaccinations and TB testing* Attain Nursing Student Liability Insurance ($1 million/$6 million)* Have current Health Insurance Hold current American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider CPR: Adult, Child, Infant and AED* *NOTE: additional information will be provided to the student regarding these requirements with their conditional acceptance notification.
