WEEK20 PHYSICAL SCIENCE VOCABULARY. 1) THERMAL ENERGY Total amount of energy in all of the particles contained in a sample of matter.
Heat Transfer. Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between substances that are at different temperatures.
Heat Not just hot or cold…but much, much more!!!.
Seconds Left: List & describe the three types of heat transfer.
Conduction The transfer of energy as heat between particles collide within a substance or between two objects in contact Two objects of unequal temperature.
UNDERSTANDING HEAT TRANSFER: CONDUCTION, CONVECTION AND RADIATION.
Heat Transfer Thermal energy Temperature is the average amount of energy of motion of each particle of a substance. Thermal energy is the total energy.
Heat Movement. Golden Rule of Heat Movement The golden rule is… Heat always moves from a warmer object to a cooler object. You can think of it like water,
HEAT TRANSFER. HEAT Heat is thermal energy that is in transit (movement). Energy can move from one place, object, or system to another.

Heat Transfer

Lesson Goals Students will: Explain how heat moves from one place to another including how cooler materials can become warmer and vice versa. Describe how heat moves by conduction, convection and radiation. Give examples of heat transfers that occur in every day situations.

Key Ideas Energy can move from one place, object or system to another. Substances heat or cool as a result of energy transfer. Energy transfers from warmer matter to cooler matter until both reach the same temperature. Heat transfers occur in three ways; by radiation, conduction and convection.

Vocabulary Conduction – the transfer of heat through a material by direct contact. Convection – the transfer of heat in a fluid (gas or liquid) as a result of the movement of the gas or liquid itself. Radiation – the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves through space. Heat Transfer – the transfer of thermal energy between substances due to a difference in their temperatures.
