Welcome to Food and Nutrition @ GVSS! Ms. Maharaj

You came for the credit…… but you might stay for the food! Most of you are taking this course for graduation requirements BUT…. This course is like no other! Learn Practice Experiment Create Enjoy Eat

Course Skills This course uses and teaches the following… Measuring Substitutions (Chocolate cookies made of beans?!) Fast food is not your friend! It lacks a lot of the nutrients that you need Safety in the Kitchen and your home Quick snacks to make when your friends/family visit It’s an essential skill learning to feed yourself and not depend on anyone else!

Why learn how to cook now? Health:  You can eat healthier. You buy the ingredients, so you know what is going on your plate! -You can avoid wasteful packaging, additives that can be harmful for your health 2. Quality:  You can control what is going into your food. -You can limit the amount and type of fat, as well as the salt and sugar, that goes into your meal.

3. Cost: You will save money! The average lunch meal in a restaurant is $10.00 (not including tax and tip).  You can make a delicious meal for $2.50 or less! 4. Taste: Home-cooked meals taste better!  You use spices and items that are familiar to your culture and tradition!

5. Social: 6. Weight management You can have friends over more often without having to worry about spending money on ordering pizza! Food is the centre of any social gathering  6. Weight management Cooking at home will help you manage your weight. You can eat less calories because you will know exactly how much you are eating. 

7. Culture Try something new! 8. Convenience: Cooking at home means having food when you need it!

9. Independence- Learning to cook can give you a great sense of freedom and independence.

10. Life Enrichment- Learning how to cook can not only be relaxing, but can also enrich your life.  Getting involved in cooking can become a  hobby or passion that adds so much to your life. 

Discussion Question: At your table BRAINSTORM as many ideas as you can think of as to why teenagers should learn to cook. 2) Which are YOUR PERSONAL TOP 3 reasons as to why YOU would want to learn how to cook?
