The steps all applicants will take to get to uni. 1 – Research, what are you looking for and do you have what the universities/colleges are looking for? 2 – Making your application 3 – Starting uni – enrolment, finance, life at uni. More detail on ucas.com, and in Parent Guides if you have given them these.

Decision-making by institutions Universities and colleges will review: Personal statement Reference Qualifications Admissions test results Interviews Portfolios, Auditions. One of three decisions: Unconditional offer Conditional offer Unsuccessful. Institutions may also offer a place on an alternative course So it’s important to make sure all aspects of your application are the best they can be, and that you have undertaken sufficient research so you know what your universities are looking for. Replying to offers When applicant receives decisions from all their choices they will need to make their replies by a set date. Hold a maximum of two offers: Firm Insurance If they do not receive any offers they can make an additional choice through the Extra scheme Applicants do not have to have an insurance choice if they are certain they would only be interested in one of their offers. Applicants cannot swap between the insurance and firm choices. The insurance choice disappears once they have been placed with their firm choice. Supporting students through UCAS 1. What will we be doing? 2. What can the student do? 2. What can a parent do?

1. What will we be doing? Spring Term 2015 Summer Term 2015 Autumn Term 2015 Post 18 Conference 1-1 or Small group tutorials Register with UCAS Guidance on Personal Statement Writing Drafting of Personal Statements & submission of applications

Something to support an application 2. What can the student do? Research courses Something to support an application Open Days

Encourage careful research Help manage expectations (both up and down) 3. What can a parent do? Be a sounding board Encourage careful research Help manage expectations (both up and down)

Helping with Personal Statements Key Pointers: It needs to be their own work (anti-plagiarism software is used) It should not simply be a list of extracurricular activities It should explain how and why they are interested in their chosen subject

The main areas they should cover… 1. Justification of interest in the subject 2. Reflection on academic experiences/choices 3. Supercurricular activities 4. Extracurricular Activities / transferable skills

Making yourself stand out www.futurelearn.com “Our courses We offer a diverse selection of courses from leading universities and cultural institutions from around the world. These are delivered one step at a time, and are accessible on mobile, tablet and desktop, so you can fit learning around your life.”

Other support: Oxbridge Support Programme - Guidance sessions with Oxford admissions officer - Visit to Oxford - Personal Statement writing - Interview technique/Mock interviews Early Applicants Support - We will be meeting with students who will be aiming to apply to top universities to explore ways in which they can succeed in a competitive environment.
