2. The application process from the College perspective
Application form is the student’s passport to a place in HE
All students receive training in applying to UCAS electronically
Students will start the process of registering in June 2019

3. They will submit their application in the autumn term 2019
NB: This evening is about HE application but all students will register on the national apprenticeship website too

Students complete various sections, including:
Personal details
Education and qualifications
Choices – up to 5 choices
Personal Statement
Employment

6. UCAS Application Internal College procedures :-
Students have only ONE application to complete
(over 1,200 in College to process) NB: At the busiest time, internal process could
take up to two weeks
The internal deadline for Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry, vet science will be 1st October
The internal deadline for all other applications will be 4th November

7. Tutors check draft forms regularly
Once the draft form is complete, students will submit the form to their Tutor
Tutors will then write the reference, which will include the predicted A level grades

8. Personal Statement
A personal statement supports a student’s application to study at a university or college. It’s a chance for a student to articulate why they would like to study a particular course or subject, and what skills and experience they possess that show their passion for their chosen field

9. Personal Statement
Suggestions to make a start – notes we give students:-
Look at course descriptions and identify the qualities, skills, and experience it requires –these will help you to decide what to write about
Tell the reader (admissions tutor) why you’re applying – include your ambitions, as well as what interests you about the subject, the course provider, and higher education
Think about what makes you suitable – this could be relevant experience, skills, or achievements you’ve gained from education, work, or other activities. (Essential for some applications – caring professions, especially)

10. Include any clubs or societies you belong to – sporting, creative, or musical – and explain what skills and qualities you have gained
Mention any relevant employment experience or volunteering you’ve done
If you’ve developed skills through Duke of Edinburgh, ASDAN, National Citizen Service, the Crest Awards scheme, or Young Enterprise

11. If you took part in a higher education taster course, placement, or summer school, or something similar, include it
A personal statement needs to be REFLECTIVE – what have you gained for your experiences

13. UCAS deadline for entry in 2020:
October 1st CUKAS (now part of UCAS site)
October 15th Oxbridge, Medicine, Dentistry and Vet Science
January 15th All other applications
January 15th Art and Design degree courses
NB: Christmas vacation

14. Admissions Tests National tests
UCAT – most medicine and seven dental schools
BMAT – medicine, dentistry at seven universities (Oxbridge, London Universities, Brighton, Leeds and Lancaster)
LNAT – law at eight universities
There are also other tests set by certain courses at certain universities – students must check

15. Application for Medicine and Dentistry
Very competitive, despite opening of new medical schools
Students should sit UCAT early in the cycle
A Levels = A*AA/AAA
GCSEs = 7.0+ points (a collection of 7, 8 and 9 grades)

Takes place Wednesday 26th June
Generic talks on Student Life, Higher Apprenticeships, Student Finance, Primary Education, Scottish Universities
Students have already opted for these on Moodle
Students will have the opportunity to meet Admissions Tutors and other academics to find out more about different undergraduate courses

21. Can you help the College?
Greenhead College needs parents/carers who either own their own business or are senior managers at businesses locally that could help the College. We need venues for fundraising events and conferences, raffle prizes for our major fundraising activities and of course work placements (for a week in June) and speakers for our students.
Greenhead College needs parents/carers to join the Greenhead College Parents Association. This will enable fundraising through events such as a parent lottery and evening dinner event. Please Mark Mitchell if you would like to get involved in this Parents Association starting from June 2019.
