PETRA Update – 2015-2016 On behalf of PETRA, I thank the Department of Health and Wellness for its continued support and financial contribution which allow Alliance members to work towards reducing tobacco use on PEI. I also wish to thank the: Canadian Cancer Society, PEI Division and the Heart and Stroke Foundation/PEI for their on-going financial support and to the Heart and Stroke Foundation for providing the infrastructure for PETRA and for overseeing the goals and work plan for the fiscal year

PETRA Update – 2015-2016 Vision: To create a tobacco-free province Mission: The Prince Edward Island Tobacco Reduction Alliance (PETRA) works to prevent tobacco use and promote cessation in Prince Edward Island. In 2013, a strategic plan was developed for PETRA which outlined a new vision, agenda and strategic outcomes for 2013-2018:

PETRA Update – 2015-2016 Membership engagement Revealing the Truth – A Tobacco Media Awareness Resource for Teachers Application Software (APPS) – Supporting Young Adults who want to Quit Smoking Community Cessation for 20-25 and 45-55 ages Each year the PETRA steering committee draws on the PETRA strategic plan as well as current opportunities to develop projects for the annual service agreement. For this fiscal year our service agreement outlines four different projects or goals .

PETRA Update – 2015-2016 #1. Membership engagement, 2015-2016 Expanding the membership Supporting Steering Committee and working groups Semi-annual Workshops Progress Updates PETRA’s Website & Listserv Health Fairs Maintain Financial Reports Assist with Interim and Final Reports As PETRA’s coordinator, I am responsible for the ongoing engagement of the PETRA membership. Currently we have 60 PETRA members as part of our Alliance . Of these, approximately 25 are actively involved in PETRA activities such as participating on working groups and attending workshops and Lunch and Learns. Members work together to support, implement and evaluate the goals of the Alliance; encourage and help tobacco users to quit; prevent tobacco use among young Islanders and protect the public by promoting healthy environments and eliminating exposure to second and third-hand smoke. PETRA’s plan for this year with regard to Membership Engagement include: -- Expanding the membership (thus far new members on working group (Joanne and Allison) (former members are becoming more involved in both working groups and attending functions) -- Organize, coordinate and support meetings of the steering committee and working groups (so far we have three new working groups formed which involve 11 PETRA members and 2 non-members) (each working group has met on three separate occasions) (steering committee involve 10 members with Melissa taking on role of Chair this year) -- Coordinate semi-annual workshops for PETRA members and stakeholders (today is our first of two…second workshop is scheduled for March 2016) (this year we formed a working group to assist with planning the workshops and the Lunch and Learns) -- Prepare progress updates on membership development (minutes, and presentations such as this today) -- Utilize and maintain PETRA’s website and listserv as required (encourage members to subscribe to the website to receive blog updates, etc.) -- Represent PETRA at health fairs or other community events/committees (already participated in a few events (PEITF, PEI Home and School Semi-Annual Meeting, this week event for Diabetes Association, PEI Phys. Ed. Association Professional Development Day and later this month, Parent Teacher interview at Stonepark school. --  

PETRA Update – 2015-2016 #2. Revealing The Truth – A Tobacco Media Awareness Resource for Teachers Our second project is : Provide continued support for the implementation and evaluation of the Revealing the Truth resource for Teachers -This year what we wanted to do was 1) Re-build and work closely with multi-stakeholder working group to develop promotion plan for resources aimed to increase usage. Working group determined that in order for the resource to be successful, it needs: o    identified teachers to use the resource o    to learn from those teachers’ experiences o    evaluate its usefulness as a tool o    Based on evaluation, may need to improve and adapt its content/delivery/tools provided, etc. o    Support more widespread and have sustained use of resource Key Promotional tactics recommended: o    Select and ask for volunteer teachers to use the resource this school year.  PETRA to offer help, assistance and training to teachers who volunteer to use resource o    Invest in ½ day in-service with small group of teachers (3-4)…those interested in using.  PETRA to contribute financially to cover substitute teacher fees and transportation.  -- Presentation to the Language Arts teachers to introduce resource (explain challenge last year). This year Feb. 26, 2016 -- Participate with PETRAs booth where best opportunity to engage with teachers and/or parents PEI Teachers Federation (excellent engagement) PEI Home and School Federation Semi-annual Meeting PEI Phys. Ed. Association upcoming Professional Development Day Parent/Teacher interviews at Stonepark School -- Because of our increase exposure – increase in number of requests for school presentations. Looking at the idea of developing a professional presentation that can be presented around the Island o    Target or invite English high school(s) to become a ‘PETRA-friendly’ school.  (Please see minutes for more detail on this tactic).  The Department of Education and Early Learning and Culture will be funding “Student Led Health Promotion Groups” through a new student engagement focused provincial health grant.  A “PETRA-Friendly School” may fit the criteria. o    The latest SHAPES-PEI data highlights significant variation in tobacco use behaviour and social environments among PEI high schools. Also high levels of smoking susceptibility were measured in last year’s grade 9 classes (this year’s grade 10 students). Because this age group is already the target of our resource, it re-affirmed the need to reach that demographic, and engage with high schools where we can. §  When SHAPES data is released, the Working Group recommends sending a follow-up letter to principals in each Island High School indicating PETRA’s interest in supporting schools; offering further orientation of the ‘Revealing the Truth’ resource.  Because there are numbers that can’t be ignored, PETRA would provide potential prompting inquiry questions (to be incorporated into Melissa’s School Profile email to schools) to act as a nudge.

PETRA Update – 2015-2016 #3. Application Software (APPS) – Support Young Island Adults age 20-25 Who Want to Quit Smoking WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! A community based smoking cessation environmental scan was developed last year and a key learning indicated that there is promising evidence in the short-tem regarding the use of mobile phones, text messaging and social networking websites such as Twitter and FB to deliver smoking cessation interventions to young adults. So what PETRA wants to accomplish this year is to promote the use of existing technology that have greater interest with young adults when trying to quit smoking. -- We will accomplish this by: Forming a working group to develop a strategy to promote the use of existing technology ot young adults as a tobacco cessation method based on information collected through a FOCUS GROUP. Develop or produce a promotional piece that outlines all the apps available WE NEED YOUR HELP (Sign up today)

PETRA Update – 2015-2016 #4. Community Cessation for young adults age 20-25 and adults age 45-55 Substitution activities (physical activity) for smokers, can help manage withdrawal issues Based on the environmental scan developed last year, there is promising evidence indicating that substitution activities, such as physical activity programs for smokers, can help manage withdrawal issues and may alse be attractive to younger smokers. -This year PETRA wants to determine feasibility on how to move forward on a cessation intervention…whether it be a substitution activity or cessation support group or hybrid. -- Formed a working group (currently 9 members) The PETRA Cessation Working Group on organizing a training session for “Nordic Pole Walking” and develop a curriculum similar to the “Learn to Run for Smokers” program which was established by the Lung Association of NS. West Prince has indicated interest in piloting the work. --Training session (Nov. 27-29) Pilot will take place in West Prince in January Indoor/Outdoor (snowshowing) -Evaluation framework will be developed to evaluate -- CCS – “Run to Quit” program -- UPEI – “Learn to Run for Smokers” (NS Lung Association)

LUNCH and LEARN PETRA Update – 2015-2016 In order to provide additional education to health care providers to ensure they understand the different tools available to assist patients with tobacco cessation, PETRA will: -- coordinate two Lunch and Learns focused on cessation topics for PETRA members, stkeholders and healthcare providers. -- Next Friday (show poster). Next one is mid February -- Accrediation or certificates for CE credits
