Mission PSI's mission is to pursue initiatives to ensure that all those involved in the lifecycle of a product share responsibility for reducing its health, environmental, and social impacts, with producers bearing primary financial and management responsibility. Vision The Product Stewardship Institute envisions a society in which products are responsibly manufactured, used, and managed after use to conserve resources and protect the environment and human health. © Product Stewardship Institute, 2012

10 Two Industry Studies by SAIC Oppose EPR Grocery Manufacturers Association Product Management Alliance GMA Study Released: September 10, 2012 Focus: Packaging and Printed Materials Message: We don’t need EPR. Programs perform fine now. Status quo. Press Release: “New Study Shows Alternatives to Extended Producer Responsibility Achieve High Recycling Rates with Less Cost and Administrative Bureaucracy” Not transparent, no input from government officials, selective data Europe compared to U.S. (not best performing countries in Europe) Ramsey County MN used as example – all local governments are capable of performing like them PMA Study Released: February 2012 All products covered Same conclusion: We don’t need EPR. © Product Stewardship Institute, 2012

Goal 4: Increase industry receptivity, commitment, and participation in product stewardship initiatives Strategies: #1: Demonstrate Benefits of Industry Participation in Product Stewardship E.g., Business Sustainability Case Studies, Industry testimonials, Paint Project Case Study, Fact Sheet: Business Case for EPR. #2: Design, Implement, and Evaluate Industry Pilot Projects and Other Programs Staples/PSI Take-Back Case Study; Explore pilot take-back projects with PSI partners & companies in Boston area. #3: Facilitate Results-Oriented Dialogues on Specific Products that Engage Industry, Government, and Environmental leaders E.g., Paint, thermostats, fluorescent lamps, pharmaceuticals, mattresses, packaging call series. © Product Stewardship Institute, 2012

Goal 4: Increase industry receptivity, commitment, and participation in product stewardship initiatives Strategies: #4: Strengthen and promote existing voluntary industry-run collection programs E.g., Promote programs in states adverse to regulation (USDA); Promote program best practices (GLRI); Evaluate programs (cost, performance, etc.). #5: Partner with universities (e.g., Business and Engineering schools) to introduce and/or enhance knowledge of Product Stewardship concepts to future industry leaders E.g., Develop university product stewardship curriculum that coincides with managing products (e.g., paint, CFLs, thermostats, mattresses, electronics, etc.) through facilities department – Theory & Practice © Product Stewardship Institute, 2012
