Shape and Form

SHAPE **Shape is 2-Dimensional** Shape is made by connecting lines The flat outline of an object

FORM ***Form is 3-dimensional*** An object that has an enclosing space Form occurs when something takes up space

SHAPE VS. FORM

There are 3 types of shapes: RECTANGULAR FORMS: Most commonly used in our homes. These include squares, rectangles, and cubes. Most rooms follow this form because: The danger is that we use them too much and it can become boring. It is not visually interesting if everything is 90 degree angles. You must use a variety of shapes and forms in design to add interest in the space.

They suggest motion, attract and hold attention. 2. ANGULAR FORMS: Include triangles and pyramids. It is the strongest shape. They are used in modern homes with vaulted ceilings, and in stair cases. They suggest motion, attract and hold attention. Examples: Most sloping roofs, angled walls, window treatments, lamp shades, Christmas trees, and accessories.

c. Provide great variety. 3. CURVED FORMS: Brings to mind things found in nature such as trees, clouds, rocks, flowers etc. Circles and spheres have unique qualities. A sense of femininity. Remind us of motion. c. Provide great variety. Examples: Plates, bowls, lamp shades, pillows, tables, chairs, stools, etc.

Using the white boards Pick one type of Shape/Form that you see in each room. Draw or write the shape/form that you see in each of the rooms. Rectangular
