Definitions and formulas for the shapes you love Perimeter and Area

Definitions Perimeter- the measure of the distance around a two- dimensional shape. Area- the amount of space inside of a two-dimensional shape.

Lets Practice! The following slides will have shapes and how to calculate their perimeter and area. Practice Practice Practice. Good luck!

Squares Definition- a four-sided flat shape where all sides are the same length, and all four angles are right-angles. It is a quadrilateral. Perimeter- find the length of one side, and multiply it by four. Area- Base times Height (they will be the same number)

Rectangle Definition- A quadrilateral where opposing sides are both parallel and equal in length. All interior angles are 90°. Perimeter- Add the length of two connecting sides together and multiply that number by two. Area- Multiply the base times the height.

Triangle Definition- A three sided polygon. Perimeter- Add up the length of each of the three sides. Area- The area of a triangle is a little more difficult, it can be calculated as: ½ Base times Height. There are different types of triangles that we will learn about in the future. Pictures of them are shown below.

Time to calculate! The teacher will draw either a square, rectangle, or triangle on the board and you guys will calculate both the perimeter and area of the shape. Remember, you have your times tables to help with the multiplication part of the problems. GOOD LUCK, you can do it!
