Online film distribution for schools – Danish Film Institute goes streaming Presented by Martin Brandt-Pedersen Danish Film Institute, Children & Youth

FILMSTRIBEN – Danish Film Institute goes streaming DFI distributes shorts and documentaries for the institutional market – schools and libraries Producers now take over distribution of dvds We still want to reach children and young people in the field of education We still want to reach citizens of Denmark in their private homes Streaming video is the answer

Filmstriben - a streaming video service Cooperation between DFI and DBC DBC runs Filmstriben – hosting, streaming, technical matters and subscriptions Streaming video in 2 resolutions – 850 kbit and 2,0 mbit Around 750 films available now – around 50 new films and 50 older films added each year Directed to schools and librairies

Libraries Libraries have been lending shorts and documentaries from DFI to all citizens – vhs-tapes and dvds All DFIs films on Filmstriben are available for use in libraries - not in private homes – so far Filmstriben now has started to give access to people in their private homes – through the libraries – for a limited number of films DFI wants all new Danish documentaries to be available online - not only for institutions – but for all citizens of Denmark.

Schools Unlimited access to all films – for teachers and pupils Teachers and pupils can watch the films at home – UNI-login Films of educational relevance have had first priority More than 100 films already have online study guides We are developing new interactive educational materials Free subscription for all educational institutions last year More than schools have decided to pay for subscribtion this year – a success so far

The future? Are schools ready for streaming video – technically and practically? Are teachers ready for streaming video – can they change habits? Will online distribution - in the long view - mean a jump ahead for the use of film in Danish schools?
