Birds and Insects of the Rainforest Hi thank you for coming to see our presentation about birds and insects. My name is Shelley and this is Dale and Andrew accompanied by Ryan Moir. We are going to tell you about some of the birds and insects that can be found in the rainforest. I hope you will enjoy it and learn some interesting information.

Introduction The rainforest provides birds and insects with a rich source of food. Scientists believe that there are many undiscovered species also living in the rainforest. This is because the trees in the canopy layer get the sunlight. Insects can be mainly found on the forest floor. They live as scavengers,eating dead leaves and other debris on the forest floor. Some flying insects can be found in the canopy or in the fur of other animals. Scientists believe that there are many undiscovered species also living in the rainforest. Scientists are continually finding new species.

We are going to tell you about the Australian king parrot and the Toucan.

It gets it food by stretching its legs and grabbing fruit from other branches,then tearing the fruit with its beak.The colourful adult male is always outnumbered by plainer female juveniles.

Toucans The Toucan owns one of the biggest beaks in the world. So far there are 40 kinds discovered . They have a very large and brightly coloured bill. What is an insect? An insect is an animal with six or more legs and a body divided into three parts. The Giant Tiger Centipede Is one of the smallest predators on the forest floor. They hunt their prey by biting them. They can grow up to 25cm long. They eat and catch small toads, snakes and other mammals. They have fangs that are poisononous which they use as weapons to catch their prey. During the day they hide under leaves, logs and bark where the air is moist. She digs a hole in the earth under a stone where she lays her eggs. She curls her long body around the eggs to protect them. The young centipedes have just as many legs as their parents.

Termites There are hundreds of different types of termites. They are vegetarians. Live in colonies which are ruled by the queen. Mainly live underground or hidden in deadwood. South American CATERPILLAR. Looks like a guinea pig. Nick name - Fire Beast. Are very DANGEROUS. IF you touch there spines you can get severe headaches and damage to skin. This is a south American caterpillar. It’s nick name is a fire beast. They are very dangerous. They have venomous spines hidden among long hairs which can give you severe headaches and damage to your skin, and some people need hospital treatment. They are known as firebeasts in some areas because their stings produce such a burning sensation. They look like a guinea pig but you can only find them in the rainforest.
