TFCG Preamble TFCG Mission: TFCG is the local NGO established in 1985. TFCG Mission: conserve and restore the biodiversity of globally important forest in Tanzania for the benefit of the present and future generation The project has been working in West Usambara for the past 15 years in Participatory Forest Management and Income Generating Activities. The area is very important due to presence of endemics species and water catchments. But more than 90 % of the forests have been cleared for ongoing agriculture practices and timber logging. People are very poor and don't have access to reliable, safe water

Preamble continue........... Geographical scope: 21 villages in Korogwe District (Bungu Division) 9 villages in Lushoto District (Mgwashi and Mayo Wards)

Project rationale Based on the situation analysis conducted in 2009 the project identified two main problem which were required to be addressed Community do not have access to safe and reliable water supplies Practice of ecologically unsustainable agricultural practices that generating little income and threaten the biodiverty

1. Participatory Forest Management Interventions 1. Participatory Forest Management 11 villages have been facilitated to establish Participatory forest Management 380 bee hives have been distributed to 15 villages and about 500 beekeepers have benefited 929 litres of honey have been harvested by beekeepers and gained a total 10,400,000 TZS (June 2013 and October 2014 One beekeeping cooperative have been registered by Tanga Cooperative registrar and 963,000 TZS shares and registration fees, collected by members.

Participatory Forest Management Continue..... About TZS 136,000,000 share have been contributed by village saving and lending (VSL) groups. 42 tree nurseries have been established and about 500,000 tree seedlings are being planted annually Fire campaign have been conducted to 21 villages every year 2200 improved stoves have been made in 21 villages 60 fish ponds have been established to 10 villages

2. Water Resource Management Interventions continue ..... 2. Water Resource Management Two Water User Association (WUA) of Mkolo and Kwabululu have been formed and social Assessment conducted. 10 domestic water supply projects have been constructed in 11 villages which benefiting 12,000 people Mobilizing the community through training, meetings, video shows, drummer group and study tours Emphasis community on water payment bill to insure sustainability of the project Construction of rain water harvesting infrastructure to 15 Primary schools Training and installation of 10 low cost rainwater harvesting tanks

Improved Agriculture About 2000 farmers have been stopped shifting cultivation after being trained on improved agriculture techniques through farm field school Introduction of conservation Agriculture (CA) techniques, raising Horticultural crops, kitchen garden, terracing, Agro forestry and drip irrigation Improve production through irrigation by constructing night storage reservoir at Malomboi village and irrigation scheme at Tewe village. Water management using drip irrigation techniques introduced to 10 villages. Study tours to farmers from 21 village to learn on Improved Agriculture from other successful farmers Attending farmers exhibition

Challenges and Lessons learnt lack of funding from Gorta for 2015. Lack of reliable market for agriculture produces Pest and diseases for agriculture crops High cost of materials for construction of water projects
