Jesus’ Statements From the Cross Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection are what makes NT Christianity possible (Heb. 9:15) If Jesus had not been raised from the dead, then all of us today would be without hope (1Cor. 15:12-19) He loved us so much that He was willing to die for us, as Paul wrote (Rom. 5:7-11) He was raised up just as He said He would be (John 3:14)

1st Statement And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." (Luke 23:33-34) Cf. Mt. 5:43-45; Isa. 53:12; 1Jn. 5:13; Acts 2:36-38; 2 Pet. 3:9

2nd Statement When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" 27 Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. (John 19:26-27) Cf. Lk. 2:34-35; Mt. 12:50; Eph. 5:1

3rd Statement Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, "If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us." 40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong." 42 Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." 43 And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise." 4th Statement Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" (Matt 27:45-46) Cf. Ps. 22:1-31; 1 Cor. 2:8; Jn. 8:29; 10:17-18; 16:32

5th Statement After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst!" (John 19:28) Cf. Ps.69:21; Mt. 27:34; Mk. 15:23; Lk. 23:36-37; Heb. 4:14-16; 1Pet. 2:21-24

6th Statement So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. (John 19:30) Cf. Lk. 24:44; Jn. 4:34; 6:38; 17:4

7th Statement And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.' " Having said this, He breathed His last. (Luke 23:46) Cf. Mt. 27:51-54; Jn. 10:17-18; 14:1-3

Jesus’ Statements From the Cross While Jesus’ death is on the cross is tragic, it is also something that we can rejoice over: It demonstrates the love of God. Our salvation would not be possible without it. Be thankful for what Jesus did for you and me. Be encouraged to live a faithful life until the day you die!
