Background to EGR in Kenya EGR in Malindi, Kenya 6-Nov-18 Background to EGR in Kenya The Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA), Kenya project is implemented by Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) through the Education for the Marginalized Children in Kenya (EMACK) program. This is in conjunction with Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International. It is funded by USAID. The objective of the project is to assess reading abilities of pupils and where they are found to be low, design remedial interventions to enhance and accelerate their reading abilities. 6-Nov-18 EGR in Malindi, Kenya By EMACK-AKF

It involved filling in any identified gaps in the earlier produced lessons. Two teams (Kiswahili and English) worked on the lessons. Teacher training guidelines based on the lessons developed were then produced. The guidelines showed how one was to teach Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension. 6-Nov-18 EGR in Malindi, Kenya By EMACK-AKF

Each teacher will get two follow up visits in February and thereafter once a month from March-September 2008. The teachers will come back for a two-day reflection workshop after two months of implementation, on March 28-29 March 2008. 6-Nov-18 EGR in Malindi, Kenya By EMACK-AKF

EGR in Malindi, Kenya 6-Nov-18 Assessment Continuous assessment of the reading progress will be done in April, July and September in sampled schools. The final assessment will be in Mid October 2008 targeting the 20 treatment and 20 control schools. 6-Nov-18 EGR in Malindi, Kenya By EMACK-AKF

EGR in Malindi, Kenya 6-Nov-18 Challenges cited Many teachers said that though trained, they had no specialized skills in teaching reading in both ECD and Std 1. Children in rural areas use mother tongue and lack exposure to Kiswahili and English as these are second and third languages. There is teacher understaffing in many schools and schools have over-enrolled classes as a result of introduction of UPE. 6-Nov-18 EGR in Malindi, Kenya By EMACK-AKF

EGR in Malindi, Kenya 6-Nov-18 Challenges cited In Kenya, there are no oral/reading examinations in languages. This affects the emphasis in the area (usually one lesson per week). Inadequate teaching and learning materials. Lack of storage facilities for materials developed as some classrooms are not lockable. 6-Nov-18 EGR in Malindi, Kenya By EMACK-AKF
