What Is Workplace Violence? Physical / Sexual Assault Threatening Behavior Verbal Abuse Harassment Active Shooter

Who commits Workplace Violence Violence by Strangers to Commit Robbery Violence by Customers, Clients, or the public Violence by Employees and Supervisors Anyone

Risk Factors Include: Working alone or in small numbers Working late night/early morning Working with money Delivering passengers, goods or services Guarding property or possessions Contact with the public Direct contact with employee’s (Human Resource Dept.)

How Can Violence Be Prevented on the Job?

Prevention Strategies Early reporting !!!!! Carry a cellular phone or provide call stations. Redesign workspace to prevent entrapment Train staff in ways to diffuse violence. Maintain good lighting indoors and outdoors Alarms and Surveillance systems. Control access to employee work areas.

Responding to a Violent Incident Call 911!! Continue to provide detailed information to the 911 dispatcher as it become available. If your involved, be prepared to Run, Fight or Hide.

The important of early reporting Its important to provide all employees the resources to report information in a timely manner.

Responses to a Angry Person Don’t argue with the person Don’t offer solutions Prepare to Run Fight or Hide. Call 911

Warning Signs of Hostility Physical actions or threats appear imminent There is immediate danger of physical harm or property damage Out-of-control behavior signals the person has crossed the line How would you respond to a hostile person?

Responses to Hostility Disengage with the person and evacuate the area Call 911 Be prepared to Run, Fight or hide.
