FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION LAWS

The LAW Sexual Assault/Abuse - any type of sexual activity that is not agreed to Rape - the act of making someone partake involuntarily, in sexual acts, through violence, force, threat of injury, or where the victim is unable to decline due to the influence of drugs or alcohol. Incestuous Behavior - sexual contact between persons so closely related that they are forbidden, by law, to marry. Molestation - similar to sexual assault, usually dealing with children.

Breaking the Law (Consequences) Punishment for sexual assault crimes may vary: Fines Fines and Jail Jail Jail sentences vary from 6 months to life, determined by the actual nature of the crime.

Sexual Harassment Verbal Non-Verbal Physical

Verbal Sexual comments, jokes, gestures, noises, or propositions. Any demeaning manner directed toward someone. Asking about sexual fantasies, preferences, or history. Referring to an adult as “girl,” “boy,” “sweetie,” “baby,” etc. Making sexual comments about a person’s clothing, body, or looks.

Non-Verbal Sexual and/or derogatory comments about men/women on coffee mugs, hats, shirts, walls, computer screens, etc. Display of sexual pictures. Making facial expressions Gestures with hands or body movements Letters, emails, gifts, etc. Invading a person’s body space (standing too close, etc.)

Physical Any physical unwanted touches Deliberate sexual touching or brushing up against, leaning over, or pinching. Touching or rubbing oneself sexually around or in view of another person Patting, fondling, etc. Tearing, pulling, or yanking at someone’s clothing. Exposure

Personal Harassment Is also referred to as bullying, emotional abuse, and psychological harassment Most often it is the improper and frequent misuse of power to affect life adversely. Includes: Persistent, offensive, abusive, intimidating, malicious, and/or insulting behavior Causes the Victim to feel: Upset, threatened, humiliated or vulnerable, undermines their self-confidence, and causes them to suffer stress

Discrimination When an individual is treated differently on the basis of their real or presumed association with some class or group of person. Examples: race, religion, political opinion, ethnic background, social origin, sex, marital status, family status, age, sexual orientation.

Human Rights Harassment A course of abusive and unwelcome conduct or comment undertaken or make on any of the characteristics referred to in the human rights code. Example: Sexual harassment, discrimination
