Fad diets are neither SAFE nor RELIABLE ways to lose weight!

DEFINITION: FAD DIET A fad diet is a weight-loss plan that tends to be popular for only a short time.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT? THERE IS NO MAGIC DIET OR PILL TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT. In order to maintain a healthy weight you should: Follow MyPlate Guidelines Get Regular Exercise

Do People Lose Weight on These Diets? Yes, people may lose weight temporarily, but they usually regain it after going off the diet. As a result, they may fall into weight cycling. Weight Cycling is a repeated pattern of losing and regaining body weight.

HOW WOULD I RECOGNIZE A FAD DIET? Fad diets will have the following: Restrict the types and amounts of foods that you can eat. This makes it difficult to stay on them for a long time. Use pills or supplements that seem to offer an easy solution to weight loss. It DOES NOT follow MyPlate and deprives your body of nutrients. Plans that promise ultra-fast weight loss (more than 2 pounds a week). Require you to buy certain products rather than choose healthful foods. Watch out for words as effortless, guaranteed, miraculous, breakthrough, ancient, or secret.

TYPES OF FAD DIETS Miracle foods: These plans promise you can “burn fat” by eating lots of a single food or type of food. Magic Combination: These plans promise certain foods will trigger weight loss when eaten together. Liquid Diets: These plans replace solid foods with ultra low-calorie liquid formulas. Diet Pills: Claim to suppress your appetite so you eat less. Others claim to “block” or “flush” fat from the body. Fasting: Fasting deprives the body of needed nutrients

Fad diet or a legitimate weight loss plan It is a fad diet if: It does not follow MyPlate Guidelines Promises ultra-fast weight loss (more than 2 pounds per week) It promises you can lose weight without boosting your physical activity. Requires you to buy certain products rather than choose healthful foods.
