Tips on work experience Careers wit Science and Medicine 27 February 2008 Tips on work experience Start by talking to your GP & other healthcare workers Obtain work (or shadowing) in hospitals or GP surgery, to talk to healthcare workers Talk to medical students & junior doctors as well as consultants ( eg try Med Soc) Voluntary work in the community eg STH, Volunteer Centre Sheffield, www.do-it.org.uk, etc – see Careers Service handout ‘Voluntary work for students’ www.careers.dept.shef.ac.uk/jobshop/pdf/parttime.pdf (un)paid work in residential homes or other caring environments like hospices: www.shef.ac.uk/careers/students/jobs plus own research Relate other work experience to profession Alison Clay, Careers Adviser University of Sheffield Careers Service

Student loans available. International students – try sources in home-country Institution’s own bursary system Charities and trusts (ask at Careers Service; see Prospects PG) Part-time work (if you have time!!!) Loans from banks, family or friends? Medicine & Dentistry 5/6-Year UG courses funding Careers wit Science and Medicine 27 February 2008 Medicine & Dentistry 5/6-Year UG courses funding In Years 1 to 4 of training, English domiciled students responsible for own tuition fees and living costs, although may be able to apply for student loan. English domiciled students eligible for means-tested NHS bursary and help with tuition fees from 5th year of study. Also entitled to apply for reduced rate student loan from year 5. Students domiciled in other UK areas should contact the appropriate national authority for details. Medicine & Dentistry 4-Year ‘Fast-track’ funding In Year One, English domiciled students responsible for own tuition fees and living costs but should be entitled to apply for means-tested student loan. May also be eligible for a reduced rate student loan in years two, three and four to meet the balance of their living costs.
