First, Jerry conquers his own fear and masters the physical weakness that bars him from swimming through the secret tunnel. Second, he is victorious over the forces of nature when he successfully swims through the tunnel. Why does Jerry cry when he cannot dive through the tunnel? He is frustrated by the physical and emotional weakness that prohibits him from performing as the older boys perform.

He wants to prove to himself that he is able to conquer his fear and physical limitations; therefore, his mother’s knowledge of his victory is irrelevant. Jerry also does not wish to worry her. What does the last sentence of this short story imply? Having tested himself and succeeded, there is no further need for testing. What does Jerry fear as he is swimming in the tunnel? He fears failure, or worse, death.
