Mathematics and English ‘bucket’ Mathematics qualification English qualification Maths GCSE English Language GCSE English Literature GCSE Mathematics qualification counts ‘double’ English qualification counts ‘double’ – the best grade is double – only counts if English & English Literature is taken. The other English qualification goes into the ‘open bucket’. En/ma doubled so they represent 40% of the measure, as in 5A*C at the moment. Could argue that it is effectively Attainment/Progress 10 (also 10 is easier for secretaries of state to divide by)

Students will be given an OPTIONS FORM like this one Some students will be selected for ‘extra mathematics’ and / or ‘extra English’ – they will not have the choice in that column. Choose one subject from each column Signed by student and parent to commit to those choices for 2 years

Being Realistic: There are occasions where students are unable to take their preferred choice of subject due to: Timetabling constraints Low numbers of students taking the course. We make every effort to ensure all students get their first choice but it is not always possible. Have to have viable group sizes both large and small

GCSE Options For some we offer: extra Mathematics and extra English Because they count ‘double’ We have RE as core which is ‘only’ an open bucket There are serious timetable constraints meeting ‘Progress 8’

CURRENT SITUATION Year 11 will have English and Mathematics with levels and the rest all grades Year 10 will have all ‘levels’. They will be judged against expected progress. Year 9 will have all ‘levels’ between 1 – 9 the will get a average points score and will be judged against prior attainment.

GOING FORWARD? Likely to lose ‘Progress 8’ and replace with ‘Achievement 8’ as we lose KS2 data A defined ‘pass’ to evolve for mathematics and English – level 4 or 5? Students will carry an APS (average points score – including access to 6th form) like in the USA to their interviews or University applications.

GOING FORWARD? When the government deems that GCSEs are too easy they will add another level i.e. ’10’ to the top end in years to come. A ‘threshold’ for APS will emerge as a national standard e.g. like 5+ A* - C including maths and English has. Likely to be ‘5+’

Final Options Form The final options form will be completed and handed out to pupils after the Easter holidays Currently a handful of pupils have clashes from their preferred options – I would like to see if we can reduce this number. The final form will be sent home to parents to counter sign. Please discuss options carefully with your son/daughter. These choices are final. Deadline Friday 5th May 2017

Warning Please be aware, due to the restraints put on us, is will not be possible for every child to be able to take their preferred choice. Nevertheless we will do everything we can to accommodate the majority of pupils. Therefore it is vital that pupils have reserved options. Use this evening to look at the different GCSE courses available and be prepared to be flexible Most jobs/uni courses are not looking for specific subjects at GCSE but a good range of passes including Eng and Maths Also can look at draft on presentation on website

Extra Maths/Extra English What is it? Why do we do it? Who will be selected?

Who? Pupils who finish Year 9 on a 4/5 grade in English and Maths and who would benefit from additional lessons in these subjects will be identified to take this option. Due to timetabling constraints it can only be offered in the ‘open’ bucket. Pupils will be selected at the end of May after the Year 9 exams in Maths and English. I will meet with all pupils selected for this and will go through their choices with them. And to allow pupils full year to improve and reach potential Please speak to your child's maths and English teacher at parents evening if you have any queries

GCSE Extra English Why? Who do we choose and why? To offer extra support for students who need help with skills such as: Planning exam answers Practising timed writing Practising comprehension skills Developing a wider vocabulary and range of skills to advance their English Language exam. Improving on their spellings, sentences and punctuation. Who do we choose and why? Level 4/5 (Key Stage 3 level) Students with the potential to improve or those with weaknesses in particular areas. Students who lack confidence in their reading and writing skills and would benefit from extra support in order to help them get Grade 5 (the new C grade equivalent) A good attitude and work ethic.

What do the Year 11 students say? “ I used to be on an E and now I’m on a C and all because of the extra revision time that I’ve been given.” Morgan “Extra English allows me to practise my exam skills. I enjoy the classes and feel confident that I will pass.” Daniel “Going through papers really helps and I do fully understand what to expect in the exam, mainly because we practise so much.” Georgina

GCSE Extra Maths Why offer it? Who do we choose and why? To offer extra support for students who need help with: Obtaining a Grade 5 at GCSE. Extra practise and repetition. Able to cover more of the syllabus and access the higher end topics. Obtaining a Grade 5 at GCSE – keeps so many more options open for the future. Who do we choose and why? Approximately Level 4/5 at the End of Year 9 Students with the potential to improve or those with weaknesses in particular areas. Students who lack confidence in their basic mathematical skills and would benefit from extra support in order to help them get grade 5. A good attitude, work ethic and attendance.

What do the Year 11 students say? “ There is no way I would achieve a Grade 5 without the extra lessons! ” Abbey “My confidence has grown loads and I now get algebra!” Taylor “The extra lessons are great, Mrs Lester is ledge, and I fancy myself to even get a B!!!” Daniel

English as a Second Language Pupils who can speak/write another language at home and have lessons outside of school may have the option to take a GCSE in that language as an additional subject. School can accommodate and arrange for examinations to be taken in these subjects, however, we do not teach them in school. It will therefore not affect their options choices. Anyone interested needs to identify themselves to Mrs Seifert in the MFL department before the Easter break.

……how to get it right. Do find out all you can, read the booklet, ask questions, listen to our advice. Talk to year 10 and 11 students. Talk to teachers. How much coursework? How much exam? How many exams? Do not choose the subject because of the teacher you have now.. or Do not follow your friends choices....these change, and their gifts and talents may not be the same as yours. You should not say, “I didn’t think it would be like this!”

Response to Questions on the evening KS3 levels 1-9 are not the same as KS4 (GCSE) grades 1-9. You can see the criteria for the KS3 levels in each subject by going to our website, click on ‘Learning’ - then on ‘Assessment’. Here you will be able to link on individual subjects to get a break down of the levels for that subject. GCSE grade boundaries are set by the examination boards – pupils will be given more details on this as it becomes available.
