How is mass different from weight? Mass and weight are often used to mean the same thing. Mass is how much matter is in an object. Weight is a measure of how hard gravity pulls on an object.

Moon *In different place such as Moon, the weight of a person can be changed. *The person weighs less because there is less gravity on Moon.

Differences: Mass Weight -is the amount of matter in an object - is the pull of gravity -measured on a balance -measured on a scale -it does not change -it changes in different places (ex. planets)

Look at the interactive website http://www.wisc-online.com/Objects/ViewObject.aspx?ID=tp1402 Force – unit N (Newton) instead of weight units

Measuring solid mass Mass is measured in units called grams. Balance is an instrument that measures mass. Standard masses is small objects that are used with a balance to determine mass.

Balance People use standard mass when using a balance. You can place standard masses on the pan opposite the object to be massed until the two pans are balanced.

Self-check page 33 The table below lists some plants of the solar system. It also tells each planet’s force of gravity compared to the Earth’s. Calculate the weight of a 100lbs person on each of the planet. The first two examples are done for you. Write your answers on your paper.

Force of gravity compared to Earth Weight on Earth Planet Force of gravity compared to Earth Weight on Earth Weight on this planet Method Earth 1.00 100lbs 1.00 x 100 Jupiter 2.54 254lbs 2.54 x 100 Mars 0.379 Saturn 1.07 Mercury 0.378 Venus 0.894
