Instructions  Take out a clean sheet of paper.  Write your heading in the top/right corner.  Answer these questions. 1) In your own words, explain the difference (contrast) between mass and weight. 2) What is the relationship between gravity and mass? 3) What is the relationship between gravity and weight? SPI 0807.12.4 Mass and Weight Bell Work Feb 5, 2015 Mass and Weight Are Not the Same!!! Instructions 1) First click on "View" from the top-menu bar. 2) Then click on "Slide Show" from the drop-down menu. 3) Then use the right-arrow button on your keyboard to advance through this presentation.

Notes Essential Question(s) What is mass? What is weight? How are they different from each other? How do I measure these properties? What are metric units of measure for mass and weight? Tennessee SPI Objective: Distinguish between mass and weight using appropriate measuring instruments and units. Check for Understanding Explain the difference between mass and weight. SPI 0807.12.4 Mass and Weight Feb 5, 2015

 What is it?  How is it measured?  How can I tell the difference between mass and weight? SPI 0807.12.4 Mass and Weight Notes Science Mass Key Questions  Mass is the amount of matter in an object.  In other words it is how much "stuff" is in an object.  Everything that is made of matter has mass.  Anything that is solid, liquid, gas, or plasma has mass. Mass: What is it?

 We measure mass with a triple-beam balance or an electric balance (there are various kinds) Unit of measure for mass: Examples: milligrams (mg), grams (g), kilograms (kg) Mass: How is it measured?  We are measuring the amount of matter in the object  Exact same measurement on the Earth & the Moon Triple-Beam Balance Electric Balance Grams

 Mass does not change from planet to planet (weight does) Example: -A full/unopened can of coke on Earth has a mass of 390g. -The same unopened can on Mars would have the same mass (390g) SPI 0807.12.4 Mass and Weight Notes Science EarthMars Earth Mars 390g Mass: How Can I Tell the Difference Between Mass & Weight?

 What is it?  How is it measured?  How can I tell the difference between mass and weight? SPI 0807.12.4 Mass and Weight Notes Science Weight Key Questions  Weight is the measure of gravity’s pull on an object.  In other words it is how “heavy" an object feels.  Everything that is made of matter has weight.  All solids, liquids, gases, and plasma have weight. Weight: What is it?

 Measure weight by using a scale (there are various kinds)  We are actually measuring the force of gravity's pull SPI 0807.12.4 Mass and Weight Notes Science Unit of measure for weight: Weight: How is it measured?  Different measurements on the Earth & the Moon Newtons (not pounds!)

EarthMars  Weight changes from planet to planet, but mass does not Example:  A full/unopened can of coke on Earth weighs 3.61 Newtons.  The same unopened can on Mars would weigh 1.20 Newtons Why? Mar has less mass than Earth & therefore has less gravity SPI 0807.12.4 Mass and Weight Notes Science Earth Mars 3.61 N 1.20 N Weight: How to Tell the Difference Between Mass & Weight
