MONTANA no kid hungry breakfast after the bell

Over 20,000 MT students are missing breakfast

Often times, after paying for : Rent Utilities Transportation Child care Medical bills …there’s no money left for food

Effects of Hunger Health Cognition, development, and academics Emotional and social well-being

“Childhood hunger is a problem big enough to matter but small enough to solve” -Billy Shore, Founder, Share Our Strength

Breakfast after the Bell On average, school breakfast participation rises to more than 70% when schools implement a Breakfast after the Bell model versus 30% with a traditional model that serves breakfast in the cafeteria before school starts.

“I’ve definitely seen benefits, all positive “I’ve definitely seen benefits, all positive. The children are more alert, energized and engaged. There is less fidgeting, longer attention spans. They are not thinking about their tummies growling.-Helena

Kennedy Elementary

Creating the routine Examples of meaningful learning activities teachers have been able to incorporate during breakfast are: Taking attendance followed by social talk time, then independent reading, and equal amount of read aloud and morning meeting Morning meeting-time to call class together at start of day to set the tone for learning Independent reading Read aloud Homework review Math problem of the day

Quote Montana Teachers “Breakfast especially has been very helpful for students who show up to class late. Without it, if students showed up late, we would have to stop class to get them a snack, and now there aren't those annoying interruptions. As teachers we love our students having something to get them focused, and ready for the day each morning.” Megan Emmot, 4th grade teacher, Hedges Elementary School, Kalispell

Our Accomplishments Since 2014, MT No Kid Hungry has awarded grants to over $300,000 in privately funded grants to over 80 schools that have pledged to start a breakfast after the bell program. There are now more than 150 schools across Montana that have made breakfast a part of the school day.
