Discourse Patterns & Role Play Exercises Asking for Permission & Requests

Click on one of the circles to get started. STUDY THE GIVEN DISCOURSE PATTERNS, THEN USE THEM TO ACT OUT THE SITUATIONS. Click on one of the circles to get started. Asking for Permission Requests THE END

Discourse Patterns: Permission How to ask for permission? How to give/refuse permission? Do you mind if I stay here for some more time? May I come back in the future? Can I use your bench for relaxing? Is it OK if I exercise here? I’m afraid that’s out of the question. I’d rather you didn’t because _____. Yes, certainly/of course.

Permission: Role Play (1) Speaker A Speaker b You have found a nice spot near a fishing pond and decided to take a rest on a bench. The owner of the spot arrives while you are there. Ask for permission to stay and visit the spot in the future as you find it absolutely gorgeous and relaxing. You are the owner of a fishing spot near a fishing pond. You go there every day to be alone and enjoy the silence. You are not too happy to find a stranger lying and meditating on your bench. This is your own place and you have built it with your own hands.

Permission: Role Play (2) Speaker A Speaker b Your class is organizing a canoe tour on the river Dráva. You are not afraid of water and you would really like to go on the tour. Ask your mother/father to let you go together with the class. There will be experienced canoeists helping you. You are a mother/father and your son/daughter wants to go on a canoe tour with his/her class. You are overcautious and too worried because the river is too deep and your child can’t swim. You aren’t crazy about the idea but you don’t want your child to be sad.

Permission: Role Play (3) Speaker A Speaker b You are in a crowded café and would like to sit down at a stranger’s table. You start chatting about the weather. As there is only one menu on the table you must ask him/her to pass it to you. He/she is eating a mouth watering dish. You would also like to order the same dish. You are eating your lunch when a stranger asks for permission to sit at your table. He/She keeps disturbing you. You give him/her the menu. The stranger is staring at your plate, which you find extremely irritating. You would like a bit of quiet and finish your meal as soon as possible.

Permission: Role Play (4) Speaker A Speaker b You are in a taxi and you are hot. Ask the driver if you can open the window. You don’t like AC because it makes you feel bad. Your taxi got stuck in a traffic jam. It has AC therefore you offer to turn it on because your passenger feels too hot.

Discourse Patterns: Requests How to make a request? HOW TO grant/REFUSE A request? Could you come over to my place? Can you give me a hand with my Maths homework? Will you help me with my Maths homework, please? Would you come over to my place? I wonder if you could give me a hand with my homework. Oh, sure. Yes, certainly. Yes, of course. I’d love to but I’m afraid I can’t. You see _____. Sorry, I can’t. You know _____.

Requests: Role Play (1) Speaker A Speaker b You have been doing your Maths homework for ages but you are stuck. Telephone your friend and ask him/her to come over to your place and help you with your homework. You are very good at English and would be happy to practise it. You have done your Maths homework and now you are very busy preparing for your language exam and don’t want to go anywhere. You are very shy and reserved, but you would need a partner to practise speaking.

Requests: Role Play (2) Speaker A Speaker b You are rather untidy and your room is in a mess. Your parents are on holiday and they are coming home in two days. Ask a friend of yours to help you with the cleaning. In return you offer to invite him/her for a hamburger at the MacDonald’s. You are very busy cleaning, shopping and cooking because in two days your English friend is going to visit you. You don’t have time to do anything else. Though you usually help your friend with everything, this time you are determined to say no.

Requests: Role Play (3) Speaker A Speaker b You must park your car in the street because your garage has been damaged in a big storm. Ask your neighbour to help you fix the roof of your garage. You know that he/she is very good at DIY. You are a Jack of all trades and spend most of your time fixing and repairing broken stuff. You are busy now making a new shelf for your cousin but are willing to help your neighbour at the weekend.

Requests: Role Play (4) Speaker A Speaker b You can’t move because you have hurt your knee. Ask your friend to do the shopping for you and to give you a lift to the doctor’s surgery. You are very helpful and willing to do the daily shopping for your friend. Your car, however, is being repaired therefore you can’t take your friend to the surgery.
